One thing I noticed is that the shutter "beauty ring" moves when I set a shutter speed (that's the ring around the lens with a triangle on it that points to the set shutter speed). So it's impossible to know the set shutter speed... I have unscrewed the front lens group (easy) but I don't know how the ring should be fastened. Will take some pics of it!

Chippy, what you say makes sense so I will definitely run a roll of film through it first.

Never came across to using the camera first, instead I dropped the Bessa II with Apo-Lanthar at the table of a very well-known repairman to have it CLA'ed. I'm going to pick it up next thursday.

All very cool. Lanthanum glass wasn't developed to create a higher refractive index, it offers abnormal dispersion, allowing better colour correction {given intelligent design}.

I'm inclined toward "accidental and sometimes fortunate effects of evolution". I think the APO Lanthar lens just "happened".

Just for fun I made this shot hand-held with my Pentax K-7 and 58mm f/2 Takumar wide open (did you know that it's the only SLR standard lens ever, from any maker, to have a Sonnar design?)

Note the f/4.5 position on the diaphragm scale. As you can see the lens and shutter combination is original, so it isn't like someone just placed the Apo-Lanthar lens on a body that was originally sold with a 'lesser' lens. But of course we'll never know if the whole lens/shutter combination was changed in the past, but based on the condition of the whole camera I'd say that it is completely original.

It gives that great Sonnar design look to the photo, it behaves very much like my Nikkor 85mm f2 in LTM.
