Saul Leiter RIP

Leiter's love for NYC oozed, like color oil paint, from his glorious shots. His work is a reminder that just to walk the streets with a camera is to have arrived.

From what I've read about him and things he's said, I think he appreciated the attention but wouldn't have minded if he was left alone either. Maybe that's my impression

"In order to build a career and to be successful, one has to be determined. One has to be ambitious. I much prefer to drink coffee, listen to music and to paint when I feel like it."

“I’ve never been overwhelmed with a desire to become famous. It’s not that I didn’t want to have my work appreciated, but for some reason — maybe it’s because my father disapproved of almost everything I did — in some secret place in my being was a desire to avoid success.

Even better than his fame, his way of seeing rang true to many people, and inspired them (us). That's about as good as it gets.
