Just wanted to see but looking at various sites, it appears that I could use my sb-800 flash with the RD-1 in manual mode or the Leica MP as well - as long as the flash was in manual.

What I am thinking is that I can use the Rd-1 as a preview for a film based exposure using flash.

Or you could set the flash to auto, inputing the iso and f-stop you are using on the camera into the flash unit. That is what I do with my RD1 and sb28 (I've not used my sb600 with this camera yet)when I need flash. If the flash is too hot, I pull it back by openning up the f-stop value on the flash. I set the focal length on the flash to match the actual focal length of the lens. In other words, if the lens on the camera is a 50mm then I set the focal length on the flash as 50mm and not the effective field of view the sensor sees.

But just want to verify that putting a SB-800 on an RD-1 is ok. That the sb-800 has a low enough flash voltage

I understand, ther is a web page (here) that has the voltages for many of the nikon flashes, but doesn't cover the most recent. Since my sb28 is a couple of generations older than the sb 600/800 and is it is ok, and the more recent units shown on the flash voltage page are well under the 24v max (see this link). My guess is that the sb800 would be fine on your camera.
