ScanMate drum scanner DIY maintenance, troubleshooting, mods

Hello all again. I have a so-called service manual/guide for the 5000. the document I have says nothing about how to clean the:
3. Aperture plate cleaning and aperture motor oil <--- very sensitive process.
4. Mirrors cleaning <--- very sensitive process.

It does explain the light tube adjustment [Im still trying to make sense of this]. I learn best by visual example.

Is there another document that explains procedures better? I dont have any of the "special" tools that are explained - I do have the usual - multimeter, allens, sprays, compressed air, ect.. I dont know how to access the service program.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. Regards.. dw

Hello all- Guess no one has some sort of instruction on lube and aperture..

Another Q if I could ask - Ive read over this thread and it states that the R1617 PMT is the replacement. Are there other brand PMT that can be used besides the Hamamatsu ?

regards, dw

Hello

Running CQ in Win 10?

Running CQ in Win 10?

Windows 10 ScanMate users, what SCSI card and cable setup you have to make ColorQuartet work completely stable? Any PC issues, i.e. drivers or Win 10 problematic build numbers I should be aware of?

I've been running an old mac OS9 machine flawlessly, but think I should try Windows 10 machine for better network compatibility in the future.

+1 for sharing your Windows 10 setup. Does anyone know if a CQ 4 dongle for Mac will work for CQ 5...also how does one get a g4 to read an ADB dongle... I seriously think I need an upgrade from the powerMac that came with my new (to me) SM11000...Also, will same dongle work for windows version of the software, and again +1 for tips on that setup... I cannot figure how to get the scans off of the Mac... Is there a way to buy the CQ software with a fresh dongle?
Thanks so much for this thread and all help!

I had a similar sort of issue when I set up my drum scanner; the scanning software only runs on OS9, but I wanted better networking. I solved it (to my satisfaction) in the following way:

I set up a dual-boot OS9/OS10 system on a PowerMac G4 - I used the Tiger version of OS10 as that was the cheapest available.

Then, I set the default saving folder of the scan software running on OS9 to be the Sharing folder of the OS10 installation.

Once finished scanning, I reboot into OS10, where it's trivial to set up a wired LAN network with my Windows 10 PC in order to transfer the scans from the Mac. For me, this works well enough without having to mess about with a server installation, and it decouples the requirement to scan in OS9 from the need to have a more modern OS to easily network with Windows.

I have a Mac dongle for CQ v5, but prefer to run it on windows for many reasons. The SM11K scanner machine uses an Adaptec 29160N, it's rock solid.

I have no direct experiance, but from what I've read a V4 dongle will not work with a V5 CQ. I would just ditch the dongle and run it on W10 with "runasdate".

cheers

Thank you nbagno. That is a 29160N is it not? That is a 50 pin connector right? Do you use an adapter or a dedicated cable from the scanmate? Thanks. Also, does anyone have good photos of their wetmount station? Mine came with the replacement spring kit as the old springs were broken... Foolish me I did not take disassembly photos and now it kind of went together funny and, since it is clear, paused videos and screenshots from old ads isn't helping as much as I had hoped in the reassembly. For reference it is just like sideshow Bob's in his how to mount video... Any help is much appreciated!

Sorry, that was a TYPO. 29160N, uses an HD50 male. Don't use adapters, get an HD50 male (SCSI II) to Centronics Male. You also need to down load the driver, easy to find.

Okay awesome nbagno. I have ordered the adaptec 2916p and cable, I am actually hoping that it will go into a G4 power Mac that I picked up to run the scanner with ability to get images off of the machine as I do not have a desktop pc right now, just a laptop... Do you know if something like this adapter will work to go directly into my laptop?:

2916P ? Typo?

Stay away from those adapters, they won't work. What may work, is a ratoc firewire to scsi converter, but I haven't tested it or researched if they work with the ScanMates. The Ratoc's are rare anyway.

Oh, and which version of OS are you wanting to run? My suggestion, OSX10.3. 10.3 has been the most reliable for me, I've had it running on 10.4 and 10.5 but there are issues with initiation on scanner startup meaning, sometimes you have to reboot multiple times before ColorQuartet will see the scanner. Happens on 10.3 but less often. For that reason, I prefer using Windows. And, 16bit raw does not work on the mac, where it does on the PC.

Oh cool, yes 10.3 but I was not aware of the 16bit limit on macs... I think I'll use TIFFs on the G4 for a minute until I decide to make another windows desktop... I do have a thunderbolt 3 pcie expansion box (made for external GPU use Akitio Node) maybe I could get a small pci to pcie adapter to put the 29160n in it and connect that box directly to my laptop through thunderbolt... May be way cheaper than a new build since I already have the eGPU box... I'll kepp you all posted if I go that route

Just waiting for my card and cable and decided to look at the drivers you linked to, nbagno and wonder now if there is any difference between the "power domain" card and the one I am actually waiting on, which was definitely not advertised as a power domain version... The adaptec driver page for the non-power domain 29160n does not list any Mac drivers. I just really don't want to screw up my scanner...
