Hi,

I got a scanner from a friend (HP 3970) but the support for Vista is mininal: the scanner has a dedicated slot for negatives but it can only be used with the XP drivers. HP says that for better Vista support, please look at their other offerings. If I'm going to buy a new scanner, no way it'll be an HP, so here's my question.

I have a few hundreds of negatives to scan and a few hundreds of slides (possibly a few thousand if my dad decides I should help him out with his slides, too). Occasionally, I'd like to be able to scan paper documents, too (though I can use that HP for that). My budget is the highest quality for as little money as possible 😎

I've read a tremendous amount of good stuff about the Epson V700. It has a good system of loading negatives. If it's possible to buy a second film/slide holder, I could load a second batch while the first batch is scanning and save some time. But the price is a disadvantage (best case €400 from a reputable shop on eBay, >€500 in an online shop). Are cheaper Epson scanners any good ? I'm looking at the v350 and the 4490 (v500 and v4990 is close enough in price to the v700).

The second option is a dedicated film scanner. How's batch processing with a these systems ? The cheapest Nikon I can find is the Coolscan V, which is too expensive. In one online shop, I also find cheaper film scanners from brands like Plustek and Reflecta, but I don't know those brands. The cheapest is a "PLUSTEK Scanner OpticFilm 7200" which, at €183, I consider very affordable. Does anybody have experience with this scanner ?

Okay, me so foolish. I searched for Plustek on RFF and found a billion threads on it. Of course. I should've done it before.

Looks like an interesting scanner, let's hope I get that SilverFast SE working.

Thanks for the info in other threads all of you !
