The key is also to have the right scanning software. If you use the scanner vendor's software, generally you'll get less-than-stellar results, specially since all the "easy" features are 24-bit (i.e. 8 bit per channel). If you use a really nice scanning program, like SilverFast, using 16-bit, most of the time you'll find yourself having to do very little tweaking during scan time, and doing your tweaking post-scanning later.

A stitch in time saves a pint.
 
Logic tells me that you have to do it as good as possible at the scanning. After you have scanned, you can't get more out if it than it is recorded in the image file.
