this is just a fyi...

i traded for a metal 48mm screw on hood in hopes that it would fit on my 50/1.4 and it does.
obviously the size is right but i thought it would intrude into the fov and not be usuable.
it is slightly wider and deeper than the original canon hood and at first glance through the finder i thought it was way too big. but after comparing the 2 there really is not that big of a difference.
and i like/prefer a screw on to a clamp on cause i'm a scaredy kinda cat about losing that expensive hood.

so now i have 3 hoods that work and feel secure so that losing one won't bother me as much.

anyway, for those who were looking for a hood, maybe a metal 48 screw on is in your future.

btw, i also bought and tried a 48 screw on rubber collapsible hood but that one really got in the way of the fov.
anyone want it?, free for the asking.

sorry, i was not clear.

it's not a for sale ad, i just wanted people to know that a simple and cheap screw in hood would work on the 1.4 also.

i traded capnslack for the screw in and he paid 5 bucks for it on ebay i think.

Sorry Joe, I misunderstood the last line of your post - must be something to do with being divided by a common language ;-)

now i feel like the a dolt.
you were talking about the rubber hood?
the one i said was free?

doh!!

yes you can have it, no problem.
it does protrude into the fov more than the metal hood, but it could also be cut very easily if you wanted.
i'll ship within the next couple of days.

I use a very nice Hoya Metal 48mm hood on my Canonet. I'm looking for another to use on my second Canonet Now that the Black one has been proven and is now the toy of choice when I want to use a Canonet.

I have also used a 49mm hood with a thin step down adapter But Like an Idot let that 0ne go when I sold off an extra Canonet.

I would sure like to find a Hoya 40mm hood to use on my 50mm f1.8 the Rectangular Canon one is big enough to end up not being used.

Joe, you can screw in your Canon 50/1.4 hood by using a 48mm threaded to Series VII adpater (Canon or other brand).

However, I find the Canon screw-clamp adapters (34mm, 42mm, and 50mm) are extremely secure on the lens. The Canon slip-on ones, however, are turkeys, since they slip off equally easily, and scratch up the lens barrel.

agreed!
the clamp on hoods are secure, much more so than i.

after shooting a few rolls this weekend with the 48 screw on hood, i plan to return to the clamp on canon. the screw on cuts into the fov just a bit more than the clamp on but it's also just enough to find annoying.

i had not thought of using a different adapter to make the canon a screw on. i will now have to hunt one down in order to try it out.
thanks john.
