Screw to M Mount Adaptors - Help

I use an RD-1. When I bought it last April I bought the CV 28 Ultron and a screw to M adaptor. I have since bought and used (with the same adaptor) various 35, 50 and 75 lenses. All seems fine. However, I noticed on Robert White's site that they sell adaptors for 28/90, 35/135 and 50/75. My questions are, do I need to buy the "right" adaptor? What's the impact of using the original adaptor (28/90) with all my other lenses? Your help will be much appreciated.

On the R-D1, there is no difference. The various versions bring up the appropriate framelines on Leica M cameras. On the R-D1 framelines are manually selected, so you can use the same adapter on all the lenses with no impact on the image.

AFAIK the RD-1 has no automatic frames, you have to change them manually. So the only benefit would be a faster change of lenses...

No impact other than that of bringing up the correct framelines. You can make do with just one screw to M adaptor, but in doing so you'd need to manually change (and hold) the frameline selector lever to see the proper framing. So as a matter of convenience it helps a large amount to have the right M adaptor. (Of course, with a lens for which the camera you're using doesn't even have the correct framelines, like a 28mm lens on a Bessa, this doesn't matter.)

Gid: If you ever plan to use the lenses on an M Leica body, it would help to have the right adaptor to bring up the right frames on an M Leica body. If you don't have a Leica M and don't plan on using one, then no worries.

I think that Stephen Gandy (Cameraquest) sells "generic" adapters for about 2/3 of the price of a "regular" adapter that brings up specific framelines.

Really? He seemed quick to itemize a 28/90 adapter to use with the 15mm heliar I bought from him (in addition to buying the appropriate "D" viewfinder in the same package). Didn't know there was a cheaper alternative -- ie, don't need the framelines brought up with the 15mm heliar -- with or without a Leica M for that matter!

OK I just went to Stephen's site and the generic adapters aren't there any more so he must have sold out. A good source for inexpensive adapters is Merkle Camera in Canada. They sell the excellent Marumi adapters at around $35 per adapter.

I've seen some rather off quality ones though. Maybe one in the dozen or so I've held, but they really were poor quality.

The Leica is good, Voigt good and I have a brass one with no name that's good. Maybe I bought one of the Voigtlanders new, but all the rest on eBay, off price.

Now, the main question... I leave them on each lens because the 1/4 turn is much quicker than aligning and screwing the LTM. However, cap's don't fit on the really deep (12 mm, etc) wide ones. Does anyone know of a source for cheap (natch!) deep M caps?

My solution was to get the Voigtlander adapters from Stephen at CameraQuest.com, which are only $55 each, very robust, a perfect fit lining up the lens in the middle of the top (like an M mount lens), and also include a big, deep M mount rear cap so you can keep your screw-mount lenses with the adapter on, a nice bonus. Mr. Gandy may now how you could get the Voigtlander M mount rear caps solo, but considering what Leica wants for rear caps, it's a pretty good deal for the adapter and the rear M cap.

Try and find the ones that were made for the Minolta CL lenses.They are about 1.5 mm deeper.Some older camera shops have them in their bottom drawer at the back.
