My first digi cam was a Canon P&S that takes SD cards. I put the card into my universal card reader several times and upon reinsertion into the camera I got a message "card locked". I removed it and unlocked it with the slide switch. Other than this , I never touched the switch.
On about the fourth cycle yesterday, the switch fell out and the card was caracked along the edge. The camera reads same error message and there is no longer an unlock switch to move.
All the images had been downloaded and it was a cheap 512 card, sufficient for a P&S. I read somewhere there was a person who also wrote about a card he could not unlock, so I must not be unique.
My advice to all is to treat these memory card with care.
Anyone else have this problem?

A lot depends on card quality. I've had two of one brand fail, and one of another; but they were cheap cards. Now I use the best I can find.
