i've been using a 2gig sandisk extreme III card, shooting raw, which seems to hold about 124 images (raw only, no jpeg preview).
when i changed to my ultra II, 2gig card, i noticed it would only hold about 25 images, according to the dial. the same thing happened when i replaced it with the extreme III card.

i reformatted both cards and they are both back to showing the 100+ image capability.

has anyone else experienced anything like this?

Yes, you will need to recalibrate -just select calibrate needles in the settings menu.It might take a few goes to get it right but its straightforward to do and its in the manual.

By the way, may i know what's the difference of switching to Ultra II?
Does the transfer speed improve?
I was planning to get memory cards for R-D1, still deciding which to get.

i started with the ultra II and decided to try the extreme III. from what i've learned there doesn't seem to be any difference in write time to the card, but they say the download transfer time is faster. as well, the extreme III is said to be more durable and comes with software to retrieve lost files.
good to remember 2 gigs are the maximum that can be used in the rd1.

I have 2 gig card in the Rd-1 and I am shooting RAW. The photo count says I have room for a little over 100 exposures. Shouldn't that be 200, if my math is correct? Any advice?

i've been using a 2gig sandisk extreme III card; the dial registers somewhere over the 100 indicator. i'm shooting raw only, no jpeg preview, and my card filled up with 124 raw file images.

tajart : If you delete the raws with a Mac, it moves the files into a Trash folder called .Trashes which only gets cleared if you choose to Empty the Trash, before ejecting the card.

The format option is the best option IMHO.

BTW, I get just over 100 shots with RAW only on a 1gig card.

It is always best to Format the card in the camera (not just delete or format on the computer) to ensure all files have been removed and the card is optimised for use.

Shooting only RAW I get around 200 images on a 2 GB card. I always format the card inside the camera after transferring the files to the computer. The speed of the cards is quite irrelevant when using them with an R-D1 since the camera writes far to slow to outperform most cards. A midrange card like the Extreme II or the cheaper Kingston cards should be sufficient. Cards like the Extreme III are mainly built for SLRs with high FPS rates.
