Seal is a bit different I think. He's such an enthusiast that he is/was one of the Leica ambassadors.
Hm, and whats the meaning of this statment?
Is Leica now more trustworthy, because a singer likes their products?
Or should I go and buy Seal CDs because he likes Leicas?
Such marketing nonsense leave me cold...

The meaning is, that it's more likely that Seal get products for free than other celebrities.

It's this kind of stuff that makes me want to buy a Zeiss product.
If you reduce your products to things that no major or minor celebrity advertised for then you have a product variety to chose form compared to a typical communist country

I am absolutely sure. Not only did I see Mr. Kaufmann give him a brand new M9 (plus a 50 .95 I think) at the launch event a friend and dealer who also sells to Seal has told me about some of what he has gotten for free.
Why Seal is so special, I have no idea, I think they just like him...

Are you absolutely sure? Because they're not outstandingly generous towards 'celebrities', at least in Europe. I use the quotation marks not because I wish to denigrate Seal (I've never actually heard of him) but because despite their their long history of presenting landmark serial numbers to famous people, and although they do hand out limited numbers of cameras (more rarely lenses) for pre-release testing and long-term review, for the most part they don't give a toss about having their cameras seen in the hands of celebrities who don't pay for them.
Cheers,
R.

Sorry, Tom, I didn't mean your statement, but Leicas: Seal as ambassador...

Perhaps you don't like him, his music or whatever. But leave that aside. He's popular (more in the US I think) and he is an enthusiastic user. Not too bad for Leica. Not like pop-stars who advertise for coke and drink pepsi (or the other way round).

Well, he lives in the US now but he tours worldwide. He'll be all over Europe this summer according to his site.
Steve Huff has recently traveled with him, and I think he (Steve)is now the "official" photographer for the tours.
I bet that would be fun, and think of all those frequent flyer miles you'd accumulate.

Fair enough. As you say, they must just like him.

I don't have any interest in what celebrities buy or eat or who they do.. I'm just commenting on the following they have among their fans.
If they buy or do something.. then it must be the thing to buy or do..
As for the camera market, it's been on a trend for a number of years now. I don't think that the camera that Paris Hilton chooses to use will have a big effect on the market.. but maybe you have a better knowledge of these matters.
I thought the "Communist" bit was interesting.. nice! How does that fit into the "new" Econophysics market models?

You may be right... luckily this does not bother me, even if Paris Hilton would be Leica ambassador - I like my MP...

Because Seal married Heidi Klum who is one of the hottest German born supermodels.

I remember Seal also got a brand new S2 with a kit lens at the launch event.

Must be hard not to be able to simply participate in a comunity without getting all that "special attention" and all the talk about wether or not you pay for your gear...
I suppose lots of people around here have a priviledged conection with a camera or optic maker.
Are we really that interested in the nature and the extend of what is given to them?
All we have lost in the trade is the ability to ask some questions to a dedicated user that have a very special Leica camera. Too bad for him and for us...

I want to see him going through the airport wearing that around his neck. Which is the point of the OP "wearing it proudly..." that's a great product placement.

I've enjoyed Seal's contributions at Steve Huff's site. He's modest and self-effacing. When he posts, he sounds like a photo geek just like the rest of us. From what I've seen of his photography, it would fit just fine into the gallery postings here. There's no rule that says celebrities and famous people can't be decent photographers.

Since when did the 'rest of us' started thinking of ourselves as photo geeks?

I have no idea who Seal is. Never heard of him, and this is the first photo I've seen of him. Took me 60 years to get so out of step w/ current events, and it's been swell.

Leica Ambassador...
A quote from Seal on Steve Huff's site.
"Although I must say that I’m not officially endorsing the Ricoh as I’ve recently signed an exclusive with Leica as there first ever global ambassador. Great photograh, remember that there’s a major firmware update to the GXR that will be posted tomorrow, bringing among ore things, five new filter profiles."
It is found in this article. For what it's worth.

That's easy. He is a member here, that does not post anymore. That is ashame. I like his choice in cameras. I'll bet he takes a lot of pictures of his family.

I don't see what the big deal is about whether he gets a few freebies from Leica. I read on Steve Huff's site that he has an M9 Ti and actually uses it. Add that to all of the other gear he apparently has bought and a free lens or body is just a drop in the bucket, then add the value of the product placement. All that aside, I enjoy his posts on the Steve Huff website, enjoy a few of his songs too, congratulate him on his beautiful wife and family, and he seems OK to me. I missed the whole hubbub when he tried to post here as it was before I joined, but I like this forum and would prefer that we don't alienate people from it.
Cheers,
Rob
