After seeing Sean's review, I've decided that I definately want to get my lenses coded (after I've worked with the camera for a while.) Has anybody heard any more about getting that done in North America? I'd prefer not to ship to Solms...I'd also heard a rumor that the US Leica shop would only code lenses with USA warranties, and wouldn't do grey market stuff. Anything to that?

surely that can't be true.

since leica usa is sponsoring a lens coding promotion (buy a new lens, get two coded for free), i imagine that means they'll be performing the coding at their new jersey center.

I don't believe that either. I guess I'll find out, because I just sent in a lens I bought from a German dealer for some minor repairs and for coding.

As for the process, it's a simple matter of sending it to Leica in New Jersey. Here is the reply I got:

I have enclosed the shipping instructions below. Please do not forward your lenses to our repair before November 1st. The six bit modification process is scheduled to start around the first week of November. The cost of the modification is $125.00 per lens. Please let me know if you have any further questions.
Please send it to: Leica Camera Inc 1 Pearl Court Unit A Allendale, NJ 07401 ATT:SERVICE DEPT
We recommend shipping via UPS/FedEx or whatever is most convenient for you. Include a note with your name, address, daytime phone and description of what you would like to have repaired. A repair notice will be mailed to you in approx 2-3 days after we receive the equipment. Please allow a few more days for that mail to reach you. Make a note of the serial number for your records.

Other marketing documents clarify that the $125 covers return shipping, too.
