Why are serial numbers smudged out or kept secret or listed as 678XXX in Evil-bay listings?

I suppose it keeps third parties from making a police report that it was stolen from their storage shed some time in the last 2 months, not sure when. It has a little ding on the top plate, and yada yada yada. You probably would get to the bottom of it sooner or later but it would be a major headache for the buyer and seller if a third party made such a claim. A rough description with a matching serious number they would take as a serious claim.
Edited to add: ACK I knew that wasn't an original avatar idea. Maybe I need to change back to the rangefinder RF plate, it's kinda freaky seeing the two side by side.

Mine's a self portrait in the mirror with the RB67. (I reversed it so you could read it if it weren't 100x125 pixels, what a waste from a 6x7 negative down to 125 pixels.)

Its not just on eBay, it seems to be a convention to list numbers like 2504xxx on forums too. That form of listing means that someone can easily determine the lens' date of manufacture from the first four digits, yet the owner doesn't have to provide full disclosure on the serial nr. if they don't want to for whatever reason.
Same thing is usually done in forums discussing old firearms, where there's enough serial number disclosed for someone to observe that the item is one of the 1941 Romanian-contract Berettas, for instance.
