Sekonic L-398 vs L-398A (Studio Deluxe III)

I'd like to ask you guys if there is any significant difference between selenium cell (older L-398 meters) and light powered amorphous silicon photocell (L-398A) in terms of measuring performance. E.g., previous models of L-398 are not the best meters for measuring reflected light and don't work well in low light. Is Studio Deluxe III aby better?

I love these meters (no batteries!) and have several, but I haven't noticed that the new ones are any better in low light conditions. I think they are rated at EV 4.

For lower light, you might be better served by a Sekonic 308, EV 0. They take one AA battery, small and reliable in my experience.

The 398A uses a amorphous photo cell insted of the tradional selenium for a longer cell life and a bit better sensitivity. All models will last for years if stored properly. I had a L28C from 1970 and it was just as accurate as my 308s. If you want more dynamic range, get a 308. Plus it has flash metering capabilities.

As a matter of fact I do have 308s, but I find analogue meters more comfortable (faster) to use. Therefore I use old Ikophot S while shooting street, however I feel I need an upgrade from silicon-cell meter. It's a pity 398A is not an improvement over older versions, at least as far as measuring capability is concerned. It seems like simple L-208 may be as good as L-398A for street work, if not better (silicon cell, wider EV range)...

certainly the 208 is smaller and (a lot) lighter. both differences are quite welcome on the street, and (to me) more important than the range.

According to Sekonic's specs, the Selenium and Amorphous Silicon versions of the Studio Deluxe have the exact same (crappy) low light sensitivity.

You need a modern battery powered meter for good low light sensitivity. I have an L-758DR, which meters down to EV -2. I wish I had the money for the new L-858 (replaced the 758 in Sekonic's line). It meters down to EV -5 in incident light mode.
