ps, I don't actually use a mirror, but it's just as bad. A digital P&S with a live lcd that twists around so I can see it to pose. That way, I don't even have to flip the horizontal!

I just figured it was logical. An avatar represents your words on an internet forum, so to me, it makes sense to use a picture of me. Second, I showed the item that connects me to this particular forum, in this case, my Leica rangefinder camera. And you can certainly imply from the photo that 1) I am a nerd, and 2) that I am a funny looking nerd.

Thats makes alot of sense, and your avatar is lighthearted and humorous.

I was mainly referring to the avatars with people holding a camera pressed up to their face with a serious expression. Behold! the photographer, it just seems a little wack to me.

Here's a couple of mine...

Thanks Heldur!

I think that shooting one's self in the mirror is an easy way of getting your head and a camera both in the shot. As for looking like a great photographer, aren't all of these really just homage to Feininger's 1955 photograph of The Photojournalist?

Me thinks you take yourself and photography a bit too seriously.......

I suggest a look at Cindy Sherman's "Untitled Movie Stills" book to see what actually can be done with self portraiture besides simply photographing oneselves in a mirror.
That's really funny Bob. When I was looking for the Duane Michals (thanks for the correction!) photograph that reminded me of the one you posted in the other related thread, I came across a series he did: Who is Sidney Sherman, which satirizes the photography of Cindy Sherman, and other photographers who have achieved commercial success at the expense of their artistic freedom.

i shoot myself in mirror on almost every roll. reasons? i like to have photo of me from time to time - and its the easiest way to take it. also nice reminder which camera and lens was used for film...
i would also use them for avatar but this piglet is so cute... :D
so i use mirror shots for facebook and things like that.

I'm a shallow narcissist so I take at least one picture of myself on every roll, even on 120.. My entry to the competition:

True.

As I think about it, that self-portrait with the camera in the mirror has far more class than either the pouty webcam self-portrait or that arms-length cell phone self-portrait. :)

I confess to being a nerd at least in this respect. I have done it to myself and I have neither grown hair on my palms nor went blind.

At least my biographers will have tens of thousands of photos of me from which to choose, and the best part is no royalties to pay!

Probably 90% of the photos my teenage daughters take with their cell phones and compact cameras are arms-length portraits, often including one or more friends. The arms-length self-portrait is so popular that Panasonic has provided a Self Portrait mode on the LX3. The manual describes the process, complete with an illustration of a young girl with camera held at arm's length pointing back at her.

.

I use the mirror self portrait w/camera to record what camera/lens or camera kit I used for a particular roll of film. Very handy for those of us who don't do the moleskin-thing.

Anyone else who may be interested in this mirror self portrait contest, post your pics soon. This little contest is wrapping up in a few days.

Heldur, if you'd read the caption that was with that photo you'd know that it was NOT a self portrait. Another person made the photograph. Linking to the photo directly rather than to the blog posting of the photo together with the caption takes it out of context. Still, I suppose that some women and certain men might find it appealing. Perhaps you'd care to purchase a print? Enjoy!

I agree, newsgrunt. Heldur should have done exactly that. I'd posted the photo elsewhere, he's the one who decided to shock everyone with the link. Without that link you wouldn't have been shocked! You probably would never have run across the picture to begin with.

It has to be my avatar shot.

It has some significance for me in that it was from the first roll through my M2 which although I don't use it constantly, is my most cherished camera. It came from an eBay heads up on the forum one night courtesy of Roland (ferider) and two and a half years down the track I'm only just starting to realise what a great camera it is. This image was also chosen for my business cards which have a web adress, this pic and not much else.
