It's a tempting idea (for myself). I have several cameras, many really. The thought of selling all for the ultimate rangefinder and the simplicity of having one camera appeals to me greatly... but I'd miss the larger formats when in the mood for them.

As a someone with more than a passing interest in economics I encourage you to spend money and stimulate the economy as long as you do not use credit. If my son did that I would make sure to leave him nothing when I am dead because apparently he is doing pretty well.

Cameras aren't about economics but the tool you perceive to be the "best for the job".. of getting the photograph in your head pushed through to a print.

I've been upgrading M viewfinders, and can report the new glass is a "REAL" improvement... how big... I'm less sure. But there'd have to be more to it than that alone to justify the extra grand for an MP or MA in my book. Would I want one anyway? Heck yeah. Wouldn't make sense now though as I've an M4-2 and a metered M, too. So I'm M'ed out, and trades never bring in what they should... so even trading out the two probably wouldn't cover a used M7/MP/MA. So instead I've bought a Contax S2 to run my Contax CY lenses... which will push me one step more into film and away from digital capture. Loved digital, but find I'm loving the joy of film more. Love RF's, but some jobs require a different rig... and one that can run the native glass you already own (or I own in this case... just made too much sense). Fairly complementary to the M's I think, too.

You are definitely right that it is not about economics, however living in the UK I understand that spending money locally is good for the economy. So perhaps ordering from Solms is not going to help a post-Brexit economy at all.

I've just picked up a Canon AF35 ml for £2 with a 40mm F 1.9(!) lens so will be selling the canon slr gear. A compact little p&s with that lens is too good to pass up..

Still thinking about the one camera world- not sure I can get there just yet. . .

Anyone doing it?

I had one of these for a bit. The 1.9 lens is more of a liability than a bonus because the camera favours faster shutter speeds and the lens is crazy soft at 1.9. Sold it on the hype train.

As for one camera. NEVER! I love using rangefinders but for some applications an SLR is essential so I'll doubtless always have one of each.

It blew up the other day so back to square one. Recently took the Fuji GA645 on a trip and really enjoyed shooting it. Still thinking of the one camera one lens though. . .

One choice today, a different one tomorrow.

One choice today, a different one tomorrow.

i think it's funny how some of these fine folks want to save your money...
i have thought many times how it would be nice to dump all my gear and re-start with one body and one lens...become a purist seeing only from one pov, say like from a 35mm lens...but then i realize that gear makes me happy along with a few good images occasionally...then again, the simplicity of having and carrying one body/lens is so appealing...

I do just this! Keep all my (lots and lots) of gear and go out with one camera and one lens only. See, you can have it all.

I don't sell anything but If I want that I get it. I don't buy anything to replace stuff. All my cameras were there for a reason and that is what I always think.

Whatever you do, don't do it in a hurry. Gear choices in my experience come and go or rather go round in circles. And from my posts about getting a new MP I had some private message responses that severely called into question the quality control and service back-up for that camera. Take your time as it's not an easy question. Only you can decide; other people cannot really know what influences your decision and what rules your mind may not rule your heart either.

Good luck! Tom (I've been there before and usually ended up buying back much of what I sold.)

I started this thread a while ago and have managed to sell a lot of gear and have downsized quite a bit- although I did sell then re-buy then sell again the Contax T2!

I was wondering how many people on here are doing one lens one camera for 2018? And would one film and one developer be going too far?!

I don't think that's going too far, I think that would be really cool.
I wouldn't be able to do that though, as my different projects rely on different equipment.

I am right with you philosophically, but it's hard, isn't it?
I'm down to one camera, one film and one developer, "nominally", but liking shiny things, I keep dragging out my other cameras and loading them up because I hate to leave them hidden away.

I will. I've done it in the past quite a lot, in fact I've done it more often than not - the film-developer is harder to do for some reason. Not out of some need stick to it, I just like only having minimal kit. It's very relaxing. (I sometimes use a special purpose lens for a special purpose, but rarely and so it doesn't count)

2018 will be a year of a M4, 2.8/28 Elmarit Asph, and HP5+ in Rodinal. Already been going for a month or so. I might change up some film throughout the year, but I still have 15 or so rolls of HP5+ and another 100ft on the way.

Never would happen for me this 1 lens or 1 camera thing. I’ve shot the T3, an M7, MP, the Bessa 667w and the 810 camera this past two weeks.

Oh and the Ricoh. And I’ve just loaded my first camera, a Brownie Hawkeye flash...

Dang it all! So many good ideas here. As a true-blue Saggitarian, I've decided to go with two 'thoughts' picked up from posts in this thread, in 2018.

I voted sell nothing, but then changed my mind and wanted to go with sell some and use the rest - but I couldn't.No option to change my vote. So as a good card-carrying Saggitarian, I voted again. Is this ethical? If not, why not?

As much as I love new toys to play with, in my old age I already have more than enough cameras at home to keep me happy and busy for the rest of my (I hope, long) life.

Moving on with all these thoughts, typically for me, I can never make up my mind as to which (one) camera I would want to use most in 2018. So for the sake of (partly) pleasing myself while at the same time (mostly) using up the hundreds of films I have in two freezers at home, I've decided as follows -

So the final decision is... drum roll!

A Contax G1 kit with five lenses (28 through 90) for the about 400 rolls of 35mm film (at last count, not including the few bulk rolls in the kitchen fridge) I have and want to use up before they (or I) expire; and

A Rolleiflex T with a 16 exposure kit and plenty of toys (filters, close ups grips, etc etc etc) for the 120 film.

To help me through all this, come May we will be heading off to North America for what, given my age (70) and general level of (fair to middling) health and mobility, may be my last 'big trip' to places I grew up in.

Over three or four months we plan to 'do' Hawaii, southern California, Arizona and New Mexico (I went to school there, our bases will be Silver City and just out of Santa Fe),then across the USA, stopping at various Confederate battle fields, to New Brunswick, Canada, for six weeks exploring the beauty spots of Atlantic Canada. I grew up near Moncton (NB) with summers spent at family cottages in Shediac Cape, so a lot of childhood nostalgia here, to be visited and explored for what will probably be my last time.

Then a long, long (and fortunately for us, leisurely) drive across Canada to Vancouver and back home via Hawaii.

My partner is sort of into photography but much more into researching bits of interesting history (battlefields, Indian settlements, and so on) and loves driving. So I am, as they say here in Tassie, "in like Flynn" for this journey.

Not to be overlooked, said partner will also be taking along a Nikon D700 kit for those 'essential' shots to be captured easily and quickly while I am fussing about on some battlefield or reservation with my antiques.

Paring down the photo gear into sensible lots, whether or not to take the two camera kits, and how to pack and carry so much film will be my next big challenge...

The idea of one camera, one lens appeals but with so much gear to pick and choose from, and so much film to be used, it really is not a sensible option for me at this time in my life. Others I'm sure will have similar reasons for their choices.

Life's fun, and choices are everything, so whatever we decide, go for it and enjoy it to the fullest, I say. While we can.
