Selling my dad's Nikon S and extras

I understand about boxes. When I was in that doll club, the boxes were the Holy Grail because most kids back the the '60s tore the doll out of the box and it was hauled away with the Christmas trash.

You can see the camera and lenses from the photos. From everything I've read, they are the pretty standard Nikon S. 😱 It has those bumps on the back, which I undersand also are common.

I did take the back off and set the camera to the slow speeds, and yes, I'm happy to report that the shutter worked just like it's supposed to. The interior of the camera is very clean.

It's been raining here all day, so there was no use in trying to take any photos with it.

Don't worry about the questions. When I ran the charity auction in 2005 from eBay, some of the bidders about drove me crazy. :bang: Nothing ever could be that bad.

Camera serial number?= 6105678
Lens Short serial Number?= 332107
Lens long serial number?= 259630
Finder crome serial number?= doesn't seem to be one
Finder black and crome serial number?= 329544

I think everything else is visible in the photos!

$1200 is wishfull thinking!
This Nikon S is simply not that clean to command such a price.
I bet the gold lettering on the box is faded!
If the kit was mint I would have figured more like $1500 but my assesment of EXC+ is being fair.

what would just the camera with the 50mm lens go for these days on that auction site?

350 to 500 dollars maybe?
a user might have more interest in it than a collector.

Let me make it clear. I have no interest in buying this outfit and if I express my opinion it's just that,my opinion!
I am sure Alane has had a couple of PM's by now!!
To be honest,I wouldn't pay $750 for it!!

I got my M4 with original box, plastic bag, warranty card with HK importer name stamped on it...all with the camera serial number on each item plus the original instruction book , unused case, and Leitz promotional material originally packed with the camera....all nice to have but not anywhere near as
nice as using the camera or any of my other RF cameras on a daily basis.

To me using these things is what it is all about......albeit a little more carefully with the M4 and my "new" SP.

Sunny-16 rule:

Sunny day, open sunlight
Set lens to f/16
Shutter speed is:
1/125 for 100 speed film
1/250 for 200 speed film
1.500 for 400 speed film

For backlit subjects (where no one is squinting into the sun):
Set lens to f/5.6, use same shutter speeds

For open shade (behind a house, under a tree)
f/4 and same shutter speeds.

Indoors, typical home, daylight, no direct sun:
f/2.8
Shutter speed:
60 for 400 speed film
30 for 200 speed film
20 for 100 speed film

My gut feeling is that this will do between $650 and $1,000 on EBy, depending on whether someone really wants the box, cards, etc. As a user kit, the camera and lenses are worth around $600 ... the box and extras could push it higher if it sparks interest.

There are a lot of lists out there online. Not all that long ago, Kokak used to print a basic exposure chart inside its film boxes. In general, err on the side of over exposure with negative film, and it's not as hard as it sounds. (That's another way of saying I still haven't gotten around to replacing the light meter I ran through the laundry a couple of months back. Yesterday afternoon, as the rain moved in, I was shooting my daughter's soccer game at "cloudy 2.8" -- 500 at f/2.8, using a 10.5cm lens).

Well I'd put it in the classifieds on this forum and wait for the collectors to put up.
Alternatively find a photo shop that would sell it for a % for you, this depends on your location e.g. in the UK Nikon kit tends to sell slowly but very expensively.
A forces (Px) sticker will inflate the price.
Lastly if you hold it for 12m you may get more $ as the buyer may be in Ja or Ch, assuming you are a $ person, and the credit gets tighter.
It is like 'gold eagles' or 'Ag halfs' in terms of 'value'.

If it was bought in the U.S. military PX system, the camera and lenses usually have little <EP> markings on them. Doesn't add any value in US sales, though some people like knowing their camera or lens was originally owned by a service member. There are a lot of these because Nikon's original target customers were American military people in Japan. They had a lot of extra cash on paydays, and quite a lot of them ended up buying cameras and other high-tech items.
 
then the Canon IIF would be very sought after, as a lot of them had the EP mark.
this model was known as the PX model, as it was so popular with the US armed service people.

I asked my dad today how much he paid for the kit. He said it was $150.00 at the PX. I said that for a private, that must have been a lot of money. He said he sent $35 home each month to his mother and then used the rest to buy things that were of value. He couldn't see wasting his money, say, gambling the way that some of the guys did to pass the time. He also has a funny story about his brief career smuggling cigarettes to the black market, but we won't get into that. 😉

He took some lovely photos with that camera of a Korea that no longer exists. Unfortunately, they are slides or I'd share a couple here.

No one needs to worry about getting dad's hopes up that he's going to be able to fund a second home on that camera. He knows it's old and a fairly common model. He just told me to sell it for whatever I could get out of it. No expectations there.

Yes, the gold has flaked off the lettering of the box. Frankly, I'm astonished the box still exits at all. He was a bachelor for five years after he bought the camera. And he and mom made a lot of moves over the years. How the box managed to not get smashed in over the years is a miracle in itself.

I'll post some closer views of the camera and of the box. I'm going to have to think over the coming week the best way to proceed. I've gotten a lot of advice here to ponder. 🙂 I've also still got to buy a roll of film to take some photos with it. Good thing dad kept the instructions on how to operate the camera. Ha!

Here's the camera -- open, back and front. It has those bumps on the back. It has some dings that come with use/age. But cosmetic-wise, the body is actually in very good shape. That leather case undoubtedly provided a high level of protection.
