Setting up Colorgetter 3 Scanner

Hi,

I am new to drum scanning and this will be my first time scanning with a drum scanner. I just want to make sure I am doing everything right before I mess something up. I have a few questions.

I am using a Color Getter 3 Scanner with ColorRight Software version 4 or 5. I have the scanner, host computer and Apple G3.

1. Do I connect the apple keyboard to the dongle on the back of the Mac. I think I have to use an adaptor because the keyboard has a usb port. Do I need to connect the mouse to the dongle?

2. What is Diff Lock Silicone oil used for? The gears inside the scanner? Does anyone use Scan Gel?

3. I have some Scan Science Lumina Scanning fluid that I used when I wet mounted my film for my Epson 4990 scanner. They said it is better than the Kami Fluid, would you use it for the drum scanner?

4. I planned on mounting a 6x7 (Provia 400) transparency with the emulsion side down like they said in the manual, is this how you did it? What aperature would you recommend?

5. Is there anything I should pay attention to when I mount the film on the drum with the mounting station, doing the scanning or anything else that they have might not talked about in the manual.

6. I am in a room with windows does the sun affect the scanner? Should I put a towel over the drum area to prevent light from coming in?

7. What cleaner should I use to clean the drum. On the drum I notice a scratch here and there and very fine scratches when looked at an angle.
I read that I could polish the drums to get the scratches out.

Hi MineSix66,
I suggest not changing color for text ( I reset it to default, above). On white background your questions are invisible. That's the extent of the help I can offer, as I don't know the first thing about drum scanning 😀

I was able to get the scanner going, but the software states that it can't find the ColorGetter. I checked all the cables etc. Is there anyone that still can service these machines?

Diff lock silicon oil sound to me like the stuff they put in diffs in remote control cars.

In general, you just connect the dongle to a free port on the Mac, alone; usually you are not required to connect keyboard and/or mouse to the dongle.
In other words, you should be able to leave mouse and keyboard connected to USB ports just like now; the ColorPrecision software should read the dongle without issues.

I use KAMI 2001 mounting fluid on my drum scanners.
It evaporates nicely and cleanly on its own without leaving a mess.

I use the Lumina fluid for wetmounting on the Epson V700, but I prefer sticking to the Kami for acrilyc drums.

Yes, that's the right way.

What aperature would you recommend?

If the software has auto aperture selection, stick with it.
The aperture depends on scanning resolution and original medium; for Provia400X at maximum resolution, the smallest aperture should be fine.
Rule of thumb: the higher the scanning resolution, the smaller the aperture; scanners generally use 1 for the smallest aperture (just the contrary vs. photo lenses).

Beware of polishing the drums yourself.
It can be done, yes, but keep in mind that the smallest concavity you may cause because of polishing, could have a much greater effect on scanning quality than the original small scratch you repaired.
Wet mounting minimizes the visibility of scratches, to the point that all but the largest scratches are usually not a problem.

I don't know, but first of all check it is not a SCSI issue (quite common).

First you must be able to "see" the SCSI adapter in the Mac with or without the scanner attached.
If the SCSI adapter is not listed, that's the problem.

Second, double check SCSI ID on the scanner. To play safe, try to stick with SCSI ID = 5 or 6.
Also check SCSI terminator. Termination must be at the scanner's end.

Third, be sure you stick with the usual SCSI procedure:
Mac still shut off:
- Turn on the scanner
- Wait for the scanner to complete the initialization sequence (usually a few seconds)
- Turn on the Mac

When shutting off, first shut off the scanner, than the Mac.

Hi Fernando,

I finally was able to get the scanner going via OS 9.2 then I came back the next day and it didn't work, so I booted into 8.6 and it is running again. I was never able to get it to run through OS 10.3.9 via Classic Mode. It has to be something with the configuration. I reloaded drivers from National Instruments for the gpib card. It is a 488.2 gpib card in the PCI port of an Apple G3.

I did a system profile in all the operating systems and only 9.2 and 8.6 would recognize it but OS 9.2 still doesn't work. At least 8.6 is working for me.
