Even the 24D is a bit on the small side imo, as I always use it with a diffuser. It is wonderfully compact though, as is the SF20 I would try using the SF20 first before investing. It is said that Metz plan to release a unit that goes well with the M8. I use my SF24D for fill-in flash mostly, as I find that the M8 handles dim lighting conditions so well, that it is not worth it creating that artificial flash look.

Both Leica flash units are inadequate IMHO. Leica needs to introduce a unit compatible with the M8 that has a tilting flash head.
Yes, METZ units are wonderful but they are physically too large not to mention way too expensive.

MY 20 did not work so I traded it for a 24. It was not compatible. Although I do not use it much, but just in case......

I got the 24d and tried it out for the first time yesterday. It is way too complicated!!! The instruction book doesn't even cover the M8... Any tips for figuring it out?

how is it complicated? there is only a couple of things to adjust. for exposure compensation just dial in the ammount you want. I use mine on the m8, and i put it in ttl mode turn the m8 on, then turn the sf24 on, press the shutter button down partially to synch them, and start shooting. the sf24d manual was written 2 years before the m8 was even announced, so yes it will not mention the m8. the m8 manual addresses the use of the sf24d. this unit is about 10,000,000 times simpler than any of the Canon or Nikon flashes. if you need any more help or have more questions send a email at grduprey@mchsi.com i am just sitting here recovering from a broken arm and heart attack, so plenty of time to work on problems like this, ;-)

I've never used a "real" flash - only the things on point-and-shoot cameras...and this is my first "real" camera...pretty everything is totally new.

I think the sf24 is great for fill flash. For portraits i find direct fill flash is actually better than bounced flash as it avoids shodows bellow the eyes. As a result i dont miss the tilting head. I have my best results using it just for fill and using as much ambient light as possible with slow sync flash. I actually use it in apperture rather than ttl mode as the pre flash in ttl mode is distracting and causes shutter lag.
So I think its ok for fill flash and on the plus side, its very light and does not unballance the camera. It would be woefully inadequate as a main source of illumination.
I agree with other posters that we could do with a more flexible more powerfull unit. Flash with film leicas seems sacriledge, but somehow I do use it more with the M8. I suspect its due to the reduced ability to resolve shaddow detail with digital when compared to film.

I set the Metz on automatic and it does a great job, has a GN of 150- over double that of the 24D, has a tilt and swivel head.

The 24D is just barely OK if the above diffuser is used. The Metz44MZ-2 has a tilt head and a swivel, and can be used off camera with the right SCA3008Am attachment. It is just that the Metz is big. As usual, a compromise. DR
