California (Bay Area, Northern) SF Pilgrimage: Looking In: Robert Frank's "The Americans"

I just can't bring myself to break out the black S3 2000. Fondler that I am (with that camera) I just would be a bit pissed if I did the token swinging light pole hit with it. The supermodel will have to stay home (I think) :)

Kent - I see the euros are doing the one lens challenge Oct 17th in Malta. Maybe we should pick a Bay Area exotic local on the same date. What do you think?

Robert- Great idea. I'll start a thread on the subject when I get back from Vacay and we'll do it up right. I am sure our Leica rep would like to join us.

Great suggestion :)

I second, or I guess now it's third, Robert's suggestion.

And despite having gone just yesterday, considering how many folks are making the trek to SFMOMA on the 13th I may have to make another pilgrimage...

As always, great to see everyone yesterday. I sure liked the show. Looking through his contact sheets was cool stuff.

And thanks Randy for not making off with my Standard and 28mm.

Was only because I never got a good chance to do it! ;)

since i don't get along -that- well with the 28mm fl, it was Mike's Zeiss viewfinder that I wanted. i still think i should buy two of those and tape them to my glasses ... uber nerd look for sure, but with everything so bright my life would be vastly improved! ;)

I understand: for that reason the black SP 2005 will stay at home for now. I will put a lower case on the S3 2000 and roll with it.

Not sure which lenses to bring, probably a classic 50mm f1.4 or maybe the Millenium version. But I want to travel light so it will be a "one camera/one lens day."

Please don't bring that black SP 2005. If I see one again I may have to pull the trigger on one. I love that camera :)

I actually was thinking of selling the SP, the S3 2000 and the S2 and getting one of those beautes. Hmmmmm.... food for thought!

Only three days to go until we hit the MOMA. I'm really looking forward to seeing this collection (of art and people), should be fun.

Looking forward to seeing Kevin, Kent and other RFFers at SFMOMA tomorrow at 1 pm. Is the game plan to have lunch and then see the exhibit? Otherwise, I'll arrive a little early and grab a bite at the museum cafe.

I thought (assumed?) we were each eating beforehand and then gathering at 1pm to see the show... Of course, it is just as likely that I am mistaken as it is that I am correct, as i'm far from the official spokesperson for the day :D

I was pretty sure the plan was to see the show, shoot, and then b&g. I think the idea was to shoot later rather than earlier, but I'm out of the loop (I have to miss the 13th and will go on the 14th instead).

Have fun, guys!

Ray that was my understanding too. Which is why I assumed lunch was each individual for themselves before the 1pm meet up time. Waiting to eat until after the show and shoot, puts "lunch" at 4pm or later. That's getting on toward an early dinner time. But I'm easy and will happily go with whatever people decide.

Shame we won't see you there, as I would have liked to hear your commentary on RF!

I'm thinking to join in the fun as well despite having done so just last Saturday.

Bob, Steve and others, looking forward to seeing you again. Sorry to hear that Ray won't be joining us.

And don't worry Kevin, I won't cause you to take 3 hours viewing the Frank exhibit this time!

hahaha, Randy. I really enjoyed our pace: we had excellent dialog about almost every image, and as a result got to digest each photo thoroughly (aren't we supposed to chew 25-50 times per bite?) -- never once felt that we were moving too slow. (I caught people listening in on our conversation several times even.)

Gang,

We originally were going to meet at the MOMA at 1pm, see the exhibit and then shoot and grab a bite. If anyone wants to get there early and munch in the cafe I will probably be there around 12:30 or so.

See you tomorrow!

Glad to hear it, Kevin. I felt exactly the same way. Our dialog really added to my enjoyment of the exhibit and understanding of Frank's work. As stated in another thread, it was a similar experience to viewing the Friedlander exhibit with RayPA. Having studied these photographers and their work, you guys know so much more than do I so I learn from our discussions about them. In both instances, it felt like I was having a private tour with a docent, but better in that I got to participate in the dialog rather than just listen passively. And in case anyone else is wondering, despite my use of the word "docent" neither Kevin nor Ray acted like know-it-all experts - they merely shared their thoughts and knowledge with me, a fellow photography enthusiast hungry for more. I almost didn't make it last week and afterwards was glad that I had.

...and here I was just preparing my "excellent tonality, framing and lighting" comments.

Kevin- Do you offer any pre-recorded headphones for the exhibit ;)

All kidding aside I have not studies Frank much so this will be a really nice "first look/impression" for me. It's always great to have someone along who knows more than you do and I am happy so many people are familiar with "The Americans".

Kent

ps- I enjoyed the Friedlander exhibit as well.

This all sounds like a plan! I'm going to train down from Sacto, and will get to SFMOMA a little early to grab a bite in the cafe. Bobkonos, alas, will not be able to join us, and I'm sorry that Ray can't make it either. I'm excited to hear the commentary from whoever. I must confess I don't know Frank's work as well as I should. Looking forward to the shoot & b&g after, too.
