Shantou Era Development Thread

I know quite a few of use have purchased this film from Bill Mattocks. As there's only development times for D-23, D-76, & ID-11 at the Massive Dev Chart , I thought it might be a good idea to start a thread so we could all compare notes on our success or lack thereof with different soups with this film.

I just shot my first roll of Era 100 the other day. Planning to develop it in Rodinal. Anyone tried this yet?

I've got some done up in HC-110 and Rodinal now, as well as Diafine.

HC-110 is 8 minutes @ 68 degrees Dilution B. I think I oversouped it, maybe 7 min would be better.

Rodinal (1+50) is 15 minutes @ 68 degrees F 1+50. Also a tad overdone, I think. Perhaps 13 minutes.

Diafine is the standard 3+3 minutes, nearly any temperature, and rate the film at EI 320 to EI 400 should be about right.

I still need to shoot a roll and process with Ethol T.E.C. and I believe I want to try Cachet AB55 Panthermic. Oh, and I want to try Rodinal 1+100 for higher accutance. But I need to get out more!

And today I just shot DSLR and an infrared filter - forgive me, my friends.

Just got my first bottle last week. Never used it before! Of course, this was my first experiment with HC-100 as well.

Rodinal 1+25 -> 7 min
Rodinal 1+50+C (4 g/l ascorbate) -> 7 min

The second combination gave a lot more shadow detail and grain seems smaller. Have to scan both tests tough

Clayton F76+ 1+19 9 minutes. This one seems a tad overdone, have not checked these negs, they are still hanging to dry


My development procedure includes a presoak of 1 minute or so
and then agitation once per minute.

Rodinal 1+100 should be in the 40 minute mark, but agitate every 5 minutes or so.

Interesting, thank you! I noted that I seem to have overprocessed mine in Rodinal at 1+50 and 15 minutes, so I thought I'd scale it back next time to 13 or so, but you went all the way down to 7 minutes. Did the ascorbic acid make that big of a difference, or would you have dev'd it for 7 minutes at 1+50 dilution anyway?

Is the acsorbic acid. It is supperaditive with pap and thus it shortens time.

A lot of photographers add sulfite to Rodinal to reduce the grain--a practice I always thought defeated the purpose of using Rodinal to begin with. Patrick Gainer writes: “It turns out that 4 g/l sodium ascorbate does a lot of good added to 1:50 Rodinal. A lot better than 100 g/l of sulfite.” Those who are searching for a fine-grain version of Rodinal should give this a try. (Please note: you should add sodium ascorbate, not ascorbic acid, because ascorbic acid will radically reduce the alkalinity of the Rodinal solution. Ascorbic acid is easily converted to sodium ascorbate by the addition of baking soda (in the ratio of the molecular weight of the acid over the bicarbinate, which is 176/84--approximately 2 parts acid to 1 part bicarbonate) or sodium hydroxide (in the ratio of the molecular weight of the acid to the hydroxide, which is 176/40, or 4 parts acid to 1.1 parts sodium hydroxide) . If you use the baking soda, add it to the ascorbic acid in a little water and let the fizzing subside before adding it to the working solution.)

I think 13 min sounds very good for 1+50 without vitamin C

I have to scan all the tests, what I did was shooting as
EI 25, 50, 100, 200, 400, blank frame
so when I develop a snipet I'm pretty sure I'll have all of those 😉

I processed my first roll at 70F for 8.5 minutes in Sprint standard 1:9. The negatives look decent but I haven't printed from them yet to make any definite conclusions. I'm not sure anyone else is using Sprint, but there you are. I'll post some shots when I print and scan.

HC-110, 6:45 at 69 deg F, agitated twice-I'm happy with the results. I have more work to go through, but they scan nicely, and I'm putting some in PAW and Transprtation tonight.

Here's a forsythia at late afternoon. Last shot on the roll. I just like it. I'll post some more tomorrow.

I have not enlarged nor scanned yet
With a 8x loupe it looks similar to EFKE 100 in Rod more than FP4+
in Rod 1+50 the grain seems smaller, again more like EFKE 100

How was the grain at 1+25? Acceptable or like FP4?

So far this films developes quite like PXP
