After owning these cameras:
Sony A7II
Fujifilm X100T
Fujifilm X-Pro1
Leica M8.2
i can finally say the R-D1 is an experience I was looking for! With the 1:1 VF it's unmached by any other digital body and I know you guys are already aware of that. M-Rokkor 28/2.8 seems to be the perfect match for it, and I'll probably add the M-Rokkor 40/2 to it, as I read it's also a killer combo.
It's funny how as a photography student I went from two 2015 cameras to 2012, 2008 and finally settled with a 2004 dinosaur. My coleges are looking at my decision as if something is seriously wrong with me, but they all seem to be very fast paced in their lifestyle and I figured the experience as a whole should relax you and slow you down. The R-D1 is just that. I'm just sad there ain't no alternative to it nowadays. looks like I'll have to buy a few spare ones in the next few years, while there are still minty R-D1s and R-D1x units available.
This is a photograph I created today.

So far, there's nothing else like it.
With digital technology especially, any assertion that an older device might be good enough or perhaps even superior is cause for either laughter or sympathy.

yes, your so right. i did it like you do. Start with modern cameras but it all sucks, to much buttons and so on
Now im waiting for the 3rd R-D1 i will own, and hope to start a new life of seeing and beeing
( if you know what i mean )
My best images are made with Epson R-D1, they are on the wall and not
in the net.
if you know the basics of photography you can get great results with the Epson because your brain is free for shape and creating images.
But never the less, i'm a guy from '71 and a grow up in analog times ;-)
Let the R-D1 life on !

Brilliant. The man behind keeps adding up boxes, I wonder how many were in the wheelbarrow at the end ?

one believes that the guy with the wheelbarrow is quite "familiar" with the process

Finally got me one of these, an I love it.
Only have one suitable lense, 35mm Nokton, but it´s a great match.
(My main camera is Sony a7)
Here´s some shots from a party, bw conversion with silver efex.
