Question: Is this thread for photos taken with unsharp lenses, or for photos taken at slower shutter speeds, or for photos taken with missed focus?

Yes, I think so. :) And where the lack of sharpness somehow is an attribute to the photo. Just MHO...

My interpretation of HCB's statement is that the pursuit of sharpness is a rich guy thing that doesn't necessarily result in a meaningful photo, just a technically better one (possibly only accessible to the wealthy?). Some people complain that super high quality lenses produce 'sterile' images for example.

Does Daido Moriyama have more or less legitimacy as an artist vs Jeff Wall?

I'm reminded of the story of a back and forth between Hemingway and Faulkner which you've probably already heard...

Faulkner on Hemingway: "He has never been known to use a word that might cause the reader to check with a dictionary to see if it is properly used"

Hemingway in response: "Poor Faulkner. Does he really think big emotions come from big words?"

Was Faulkner being the literary equivalent of a gear snob or a pixel peeper? Haha!

To some, excellent photos are about composition, emotion, story telling etc more than how technically proficient they are. I'm often impressed by both :D
