Hi,

This question is not related to Rangefinders.... please forgive me for the off-topic. But since this forum has a lot of members in Spain I figure I might be able to get my answer here...

I am trying to send a laptop to a friend of mine in Spain via post office from US. I don't know how much the custom in Spain will charge for duty. I heard it would be 20%? Do any guys in Spain receiving cameras in Spain? What's the rate?

Also, is it safe to ship via post office (they are cheaper than FEDex or UPS). Will it be stolen? I can buy the insurance here, but I don't know if it covers the package once it is outside U.S.

Thanks.

Again, my apology to the off-topic......

You might be better off, DXPhoto, trying to buy a laptop already in Spain that you would pay for in the U.S.

It's very easy to ship packages to Spain -- if you don't want insurance...You just wrap them, mark them fragil, fill out a small customs form and pay a relatively small postal rate, depending on the weight...

Everything changes when you want insurance...First, you have to fill out a long form...Both forms are at all US Post Offices. The insurance is relatively low cost but to get insurance you are not permitted to ship via First-Class International Airmail...You have to ship via Priority International Airmail, which automatically gives you roughly Sixty or so US dollars of insurance...If you want more, you can get all your want for -- let's say -- about $10usd...The cost to ship Priority is very expensive, depending again on weight...I've never had a problem with or without insurance, other than the cost...

Therefore, you should try to buy it already in Spain or have someone you trust take it to Spain or, if it's possible, give your friend in Spain money to buy a laptop...Surely, there must be plenty of them already there...

Of course, if you already have a laptop you want to ship, you're back to expensive shipping if you want full insurance...You can send cheaply but with no insurance...You still have to declare what you're sending... And it it gets lost, you're SOL...

Hi DXPhoto,

Lot of laptops availables (new) from 400€; used ones should be cheapers. Sending the laptop from the USA is kind of risky bussiness from my point of view; need to pack it really very carefully, since is going to get lot of hits, not to mention the Customs inspection...
I think it is not difficult to send the laptop here, but I do not recommend it though.

Cheers,

ZéManel

Insurance is a must for a valuable item like a laptop or it could be stolen). Customs: He would have to pay 22% (aprox) of the declared value (including the shipping).
