Shooting B/W jpegs

Just curious as to home many folks are shooting B/W jpegs in their point and shoot (or other digital) cameras. I've done it all, from shooting raw and doing the conversions, to just shooting B/W jpegs, and find that in terms of the desired final product, the print, I'm just as happy with what I have been able to achieve by shooting B/W jpegs. I know, I know...when shooting jpegs you have to be willing to deal with the camera's own sharpening and noise reduction algorithms...but I say again, the prints I make do not seem to suffer, and the process is simpler. Having said that I do sometimes use Silver Efex Pro to create the final look I want in Photoshop.

The one time I sometimes use JPEGS is with b/w photos - my 5d is actually really good in monochrome mode straight out of camera. The only thing is that if the light is contrasty, you can expect some blocked shadows and burnt highlights that wouldn't be there in RAW.

The brilliant 'One in 8 Million' series on the NYT photo blog by Todd Heisler was entirely shot with a canon 5d, monochrome JPEGs with minimal dodging and burning. If it's good enough for Todd Heisler, it's good enough for me!

Thanks for the heads up on Todd Heisler. Some wonderful images there. Kind of places and imprimatur on shooting B/W jpegs 😉.
