Shooting Eastman (Double-X) 5222 in the Leica

Mike, thanks for clarification !:) The reason I asked is that I had once added 5% of Rodinal (user error ...) and got negs with much more visible grain than I liked....

You had me thinking for a minute as I've told quite a few people this week 10% Rodinal... Senile dementia must be setting in early. It all started to go wrong when I said I'd meet Ray in Tokyo and I gave him the wrong day, since then I've been slowly losing it. I cooked several roll's of film this week also, developed as Double X only to open the tank and find Neopan. (First roll with the Summarit)

Anyhow, I'm in full possession of my marbles this morning and away to develop 6 rolls of film (Neopan and Double X), here's hoping I don't mix the tanks up. :)

Most of the time when you deal with suppliers, it is a pain, but occasionally you find the gems'...

... so I was looking for a Canadian supplier. A friend recommended contact@JDphotochem.com in Quebec. This is one of the gems! Claire Vrana who obviously runs it, not only phones or emails back quickly, but checks what you are ordering and corrects your mistakes!! She is also very competitively priced ...
Great source for us above the 49th's parallel!
It is a dark day in Canada, flags will fly at half mast. I just got this message back from JDPhotoChem:

"Hi,

I'm sorry Mr Wilson, I'm no longer into this business.

Good Luck!
Claire"

Both with the Summarit I got from Bob (Nantor). Developed in HC110 dilution B with 1% Rodinal added. 6 minutes at 20 degree's.

Here are two more formulas I have experience with.....

Here are two more formulas I have experience with.....

TD-201 (D-23 Two Bath) Developer

Solution A

Metol .................................................. 5 grams
Sodium Sulfite Anhydrous .................. 100 grams
Water to make.................................... 1 liter

Solution B

Borax .................................................. 2 grams
Sodium Metaborate ............................ 5 grams
Sodium Sulphite Anhyrous .................. 6 grams
Sodium Sulfate ................................... 40 grams
Water to make ................................... 1 liter

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Pyro PMK+ (My All Time Fave Developer)

Solution A

Distilled Water ..................................... 400cc
Metol .................................................... 5 grams
Sodium Sulfite ...................................... 10 grams
Pyrogallol ............................................. 50 grams
Water to make ..................................... 500cc

Solution B

Distilled Water ...................................... 700cc
Sodium Metaborate .............................. 300 grams
Water to make ..................................... 1000cc

Working Solution: 2000cc Water, 20cc Solution A, 40cc Solution B. The "Plus" in Pyro-Plus is -AMIDOL-, add a -pinch- when you have mixed the stock solution, right before use. I use a flat toothpick to decide what is a "pinch".
Amidol adds 1/3 to 1/2 stop honest speed to the developer mix.

Development time HP5+ 15 minutes at 20C, ten seconds agitation per minute.
Works well with XX negatives too.

It would be a bugger loading all that film on to a reel though for developing :)

I've used up my first 400 foot roll, I need to and roll off some 5222 and I think as summer is coming here I'll try some 5231 as well.

Geoffrey Crawley FX4, 50-60 percent speed increase over D-76. Roughly equivilent to Microphen. Allows the shadows to increase more in contrast. The presence of Metol also allows discrimination in the highlights.

Metol......................1.5g
Sodium Sulfite..... 100g
Phenidone.............. .25g
Hydroquinone.......... 5g
Borax..................... 2.5g
Potassium Bromide .5g

About 9 min at 20C as a start.

Just to update everyone. I have tidied up the format of the Formulas page on the web site and divided them into single and two bath devs with jump links at the top of the page.

I have just bought a My Weigh Pointscale 5.0 to replace my 50 year old apothecary's balance. I am really impressed with it and it didn't cost a fortune!

My Weigh Pointscale 5.0

Beutler/Leitz Classical High Acutance Developer

Metol ........................... 1 gram
Sodium Sulphite .......... 5 grams
Sodium Carbonate ...... 5 grams
Water to make ............ 1 liter

Geoffrey Crawley FX5
Roughly equivilent to Microdol-X. You lose a stop in speed.

Water at 52C .................... 750 ml
Metol ................................. 5 grams
Sodium Sulphite ................ 125 grams
Borax ................................ 3 grams
Boric Acid .......................... 1.5 grams
Potassium Bromide ........... 0.5 grams
Water to make .................. 1 liter

Develop undiluted 10-15 minutes.

I have been experimenting with semi stand development and the XX. Rodinal 1:100 with three inversions every 5 minutes for 25 minutes. Less "fried" edges than with the straight stand development. This is part of a "project" using only older M-lenses - 21f3.4, 35f2 8 element, 50f2 Rigid from 1957/58 and some shots with an old Summicron from 1964. These lenses are lower in contrast than the modern glass and seems to work well with XX and this process. Switched today to modern glass - 21f4.5 ZM Biogon, 35f2 Asph and the Planar 50f2. I dont have the 90f2 Apo-Asph anymore ( didn't like it) so my 75f2 Summicron will substitute. All with M2's, IXMOO's and "sunny, f16" metering.
About 15-20 rolls uploaded on our Flickr. Looks OK and I will do another 10-15 rolls with this and then I will either try D23 or mix up xome Crawley FX 37 (which should give me a true 400 with decent shadow detail).
