Shooting Eastman (Double-X) 5222 in the Leica

Tom,
I have good luck using ADOX Borax MQ over time. I just processed four important rolls last night (three XXX and one XX) and I used ten minutes at 20C. Negs look good, very printable. Dev was mixed about eight months ago, still have about 1/4 of the replenisher in the bottle. I did filter the developer, using laboratory filter paper, before using it, and I transfered it to a clean clear one-litre soda bottle, right before use. There were grey deposits and black and grey particulate crud, that were caught by the filter paper. Still my favorite developer. Have eight more rolls I need to run ASAP.

Andy,

Do you mind if I ask where you get 5222 in the UK? I want to try it, but have yet to find a source.

John,
Andy might be away, here is a good source I have contacted in the UK. This guy has had outdated XX in the past. He presently lists XX at 86.73EU:

Also if you click on the "Suppliers" tab on the Project XX website, there are two other UK sources listed.

Got my hands on some well-expired 5222, a bit of base fog, and EI250 a tad too much for it even in microphen. Still usable though,

Ouch! And I thought Tri-X was expensive. At £86+ for 100ft, I think I'll just admire the results of the rest of the gang.

400' is the minimum length available, unless you find a "short-end", which should cost a lot less. This film is intended for professional 35mm movie cameras, 400' is really not so much film for those guys. I just pull off an arm's length and roll it into a cassette, in the dark, for use in Leicas. :) BTW that's about 1.33EU per roll, plus cassette cost (or not).

I can get 65+ rolls of 36 exposure from a 400' can. I'm good with that, especially since I can't get it any other way.

That's what I thought, and given that all the surrounding products on that site are 400ft cans then it would seem that the 5222 is 400ft too, it'd be odd to put an unlabeled 100ft short end in there.

I was winding roll after roll of Efke KB25 and Fomapan 400 last night in the closet. Once you get going you get into a groove -- chewed through the KB25 100ft roll and ran out of cassettes before I could finish the Fomapan 100ft roll -- 400ft doesn't sound so ridiculously huge now!

I have multiple 400 and 1000' tins of 5222 and 5231. They're sold in what's ordered.

However, before you break out the credit card and go off in a search you need to think about how you're going to load the film.

Also consider that right now Arista Premium 400 in 100' cans is one of the best deals out there. 5222 is cool, but it has nothing over 400tx. Go ahead and shoot it if you want to be different though.

Sorry, been shadowing a film crew since January and learning a lot especially using my light meter. ;) Early starts and long days mean not much time to visit forums.

Contact Peter at "Thats a Wrap". Ask if he has old stock. See my previous post #693.

Old stock is usually cans (400 ft) that he has had for 12 months. Although they have no "use by" date film crews want new/fresh stock anything older than six months invariably stays on the shelf.

All the stuff I have shot Peter had had on his shelf for 12 months but in cool conditions and totally usable.

Thanks guys - I assumed 100ft, for 400 that's much better.

I'mtrying the Firstcall cheapo Fuji rebranded at the moment. The 100 asa is very good, producing great negs from the sunny f11 rule.

If I can squeeze some cash, I might try the XX

The Double-XX seems to give beautiful results. Is there a similar thread here for Plus-X/5231? I just received 400ft of it, and ran some initial tests in 1+50 Rodinal EI 100 for 10.30 mins. The results look stunning. The blacks are rich and wonderful mid-tones.
