I understood Freestyle has some discontinued (Kodak) developers which they are distributing under own label, probably made by Clayton or so. A smart solution for this niche market. I have some products "made in Ukraine" which is possible due to the new law in commercial treatment between the EU and Ukraine. No import duties and free commercial possibilities. Let us hope the crazy war overthere will stop too. I pray for all Ukraine citizens for a better and a more stable country in the future. And of course for my friends in Mykolaiv, Odessa, L'viv and Kiev.
 
Great thread.I have only just started using 5222 XX as I found a seller on ebay offering 25' lengths for £15. It seemed like a good deal so I gave it a go and find myself really liking the tonality and look it gives. I've exposed at 320 asa and developed for 11 mins @ 20c in 50:1 Rodinal

Well Chris, they are looking good! XX and iso 200-400 is normally on the edge for R09/Rodinal in 35mm but what I have seen the XX film is very flexible in type developers. Grain is there but not disturbing.

Want to make your own? Anchell and Troop say that Microdol is nothing more than D-23 with a little table salt added. They suggest the following:

Metol, 5 grams
Sodium Sulfite, 100 grams
Sodium chloride, 30 grams
Water to make one liter of solution.

Although Kodak never released the formula, those in the know apparently get together at times over a beer and swap some talk . . .

I have the darkroom cookbook and the film developing cookbook and the German Sammlung Fotografischer Rezepte, Udo Raffay.

Apart from some additives Microdol-X is not a secret anymore.
 
There is also Ilford Perceptol. I have tried this before and really liked it a lot.

ILFORD PERCEPTOL is an extra fine grain developer which gives excellent image quality and very fine grain. It is optimized for use at the slower end of the exposure range. PERCEPTOL has been specially formulated to yield optimum results from high resolution lenses, to exploit the superb grain structure of ILFORD medium and slow speed films and to produce significantly finer grain in ILFORD fast films compared with a standard fine grain developer. PERCEPTOL gives excellent results with any lens/film combination and is therefore ideal when texture and definition are critical; negatives processed in PERCEPTOL are capable of producing finer grain and better quality enlargements than those produced in a standard fine grain developer. PERCEPTOL is supplied in powdered form and shows exceptional consistency throughout its working life. It is made up to a stock solution for normal tank and tray use, and can be further diluted 1+1 or 1+3 for users who prefer to use fresh solution each time.

My Microdol-X was mixed up in stock solution three years ago and is still working just fine for me. In fact it seems to get better with age, after it has been "seasoned" for a while.

In her really early work for "Rolling Stone" Annie Leibovitz used Tri-X and Microdol-X. Recently I saw the original prints in mural size in a museum, and they have a really exceptional quality to them. So I have just bought more Legacy Pro Mic-X, Perceptol is $7.50 for a litre at B&H, Legacy Mic-X is $9.99 at Freestyle for a gallon.
 
Perceptol and Microdol-X are very close. You also have in ultra fine grain: CG-512 (U. RaffaY) sold under Rollei Low Speed and receipts with para- or ortho Phenylene Diamine like Panthermic 777, MCM-100, W665. A-49 OrWo/Calbe is using also a CD in their receipt, now sold under Adox A-49.

A new strip is hanging to dry, XX and W665 9:45 minutes 20C. My results with this ortho- Phenylene Diamine developer with Fomapan 200 E.I. 100 were really stunning. But not all emulsions are reacting in the same way for this special developer.

I should think that "Apart from some additives" suggests that a part of this is still a secret, no? I read in Anchell & Troop (The Film Developing Cookbook, p.69) that the additive is salt. That's all I know!

I am talking about Photoplex, EDTA to make the developer compatible for most world tap water when making a stock solution.

These additives are present in almost all commercial developers.
 
My first results developed in Rodinal iso400 turned out a bit grainy but the 300feet only cost me £65 and it said it was out of date but i actually really like the results

What was the dilution and how long did you develop it for?

Yes at £65 your per roll cost is just slightly over £1 so you should be ok financially speaking :)

I'd try shooting it at ISO200 and then ISO100 and see what the real speed of the film is at right now.

Nevertheless the photos you show above do have a great atmosphere so all good!

I think the rocks was 1+100 2 hour stand, i saw some result on flickr using this developement, and the harbour shot was 1+50
these were from my very first rolls, i bought some ID11 yesterday and i'm just shooting a roll at iso200 massive dev says 1+2 for 11 minutes so will give that a go tonight
