Shooting Eastman (Double-X) 5222 in the Leica

I am curious, PMK was always a favorite of mine, in the larger format. Does the XX film scan easily with the Pyro stain?

XX in NOT a lower grain film, it was designed in 1958, and really hasn't changed much. Kind of like stepping into a time capsule that takes you back to 1958.

The scanner I use has upwards of 5300 true optical resolution so I'm not a great person to ask this. Lower-end scanners may have issues with grain aliasing with such a grainy film. I scanned the XX at 6000 DPI to get the smoothest grain from my Cezanne. That said, the Pyrocat was much less grainy than other developers tried.

Of course I wasn't trying to make it look like T-Max 100, in terms of grain, but, with HC-110 it seemed like the grain was really jumping out at me and was too over-the-top. I'm definitely a fine-grain kinda guy. But I thought I'd give the XX a go since I bought the 400' tin for $50.

I am almost out of Tri-X, which I probably will replace with XX for my occasional ~400-speed needs. The XX will likely last me a decade, while I go through 100' of T-Max every few months.

Just as a general idea, staining/tanning developers like PMK and Pyrocat will give you the look of less grain since they kind of fill in the denser parts of the neg with stain. The grain is still there, it just gets masked a bit.

If you want a lot of grain with 5222, go with Rodinal or Beutler's. I uploaded some images with Beutler's on the last page or two.

Here is a decent example of the grain masking effects of Pyrocat in a strong solution 2:2:100-

Just ran some XX in D96 the other day for the first time. No prints yet, but the negs looked really lovely. Less contrast than HC-110. If these print as well as they look like they will then one good thing will have come out of my attempt to get P30 sorted out.

2 bulk 100' rolls of 5222 shipped in from FPP this past week. If a single emulsion has over 300,000 views on a forum, perhaps I better become familiar with it.

Welcome Daryl,
Plenty to look at here. Plenty of help available here, too.
A few here haven't liked it, most all love it. I know I do.

Eastman 5222 rated 200 with Rodinal

Hi, William,

Okay, backing up here and trying to catch up a little, while a piano sonata by Richard Strauss is playing (not my favorite but it fits my mood this minute), my mind returns to your post which I admired some time ago.

Your image is very well, beautifully done! And that was in Rodinal? What is the story behind this image? Is that portrait your own work? Is that a commercial presentation you happened upon? Either way, thanks for posting.

What size are those prints? I don't mind a little grain but your image of that work does not show the grain I ususally associate with Rodinal. If you could enlighten me, it would be much appreciated.
