Shooting film without the hassles of scanning

speedfreak, that is clever, but truly only a partial answer. this is only a problem with color negative film, not color slide nor b&w. and as with most problems, i'm sure it is amenable to a rather easy solution, i just dont know what that solution is. but some out there do i am certain!

This thead is a good demonstration why film is going away: Lack of quick, high quality scanners.

Every option today seems to be a tough compromise. Nikon is to blame for finishing the Coolscans. Kodak and Fuji are to blame for not filling the gap with replacement scanners.

Nikon is to blame? Kodak? Fuji?

No. People (in general) do not want to go through the trouble.
People loves convenience.
If there's anything to put the blame on, it's people being people.

Fuji and Noritsu both have excellent scanners as part of their lab systems. The Noritsu uses Kodak tech as part of a licensing deal.

But essentially, you are correct, scanning tech stopped about a decade ago especially in terms of speed and convenience. A lab scanner, for example, cannot be hooked up to a sever for FTP. They must burn to CD first.

The Japanese companies simply made sound business decisions. Nikon and Canon still make top-of-the-line film SLRs.

Strange we did just that with our Fuji Frontier about 10 years ago. You could take the scans from the little IBM server (that ran the Fuji software) without burning them.
We used to send them through our network, small files for ftp to our clients larger ones could be sent to a different printer.
We did pay extra for the pro level software, it would be a shame if they took the function away...

Saying that aren't there some new scanners for 120 coming this autumn?
Plustek or something....
