I've been doing that for a few years. It's moreless safe depending where you go and what you consider to be safe. Aside from some security guards, police and homeless people, it is relatively "safe". You can go check out UER.ca if you are interested. But not every so-called "urban explorer" is taking beautiful pictures with his 5D Mark III. You'll encounter mostly teenagers breaking windows, drinking beer and smoking pot... if you are lucky.

Bravo broadcast a short (6 episodes?) series on photographers taking pictures of abandoned buildings throughout Europe a couple of years a go. Don't remember what it was called.

I shoot abandoned buildings from the roadside, other public places or property where I have permission to go. No tresspassing for me.

It was called photoXplorers, produced by Bravo!Canada. If you like stuff like this, it's worth checking out.

True that! There seems to be a certain subset of the "community" that is more interested in making graffitti (and photographing it) or photographing themselves drinking beer in the buff on a rooftop at night.

Agreed. Asking for permission is better than begging for forgiveness.
No, no, quite the opposite!
