Shooting in bars - film- what would your set up be?

Neopan 1600.... Oh damn.

i agree with Roger H. about an M and a fast lens (ideally 35mm) as best for that type of work. And maybe a soft release. Though I've never used one. Bought one, lost it within moments it seems...

I don't find the microprism portion of my focusing screen much use at all when the light is very low. The split image portion seems to help me a lot more. Try what I mentioned about the edges of people's faces. It won't work at 50mm and f/1.4 because their eyes will be out of focus, but it usually will at f/2.

All that being said, I recently got a Konica Hexar AF, in part because it can focus in a coal mine at midnight.

That should suggest a rangefinder, shouldn't it? If you're going to use an slr, then the faster the lens, the better (If just for viewing/focusing).

Brassai did pretty good. Anybody know what he used?
 
Got a G2 screen for my F2- Leicaflex style giant microprism with matte outside (that's not to be used for focusing)
with my 28 F2, I still can't see anything... (the difference between in focus and out of focus is hard to tell)

Is there something I should be looking for?

Yea a diopter may help here. Focusing in low light is always difficult. But I think a split screen would help a lot.

I also recommend the 35 1.4 🙂. It's a great lens!
 
The OP got it right, I have the same setup and I can say that in comparison to the competitors the F2 with a j screen gives a darker image than a Pentax mx or a canon f-1 so the right solution is a more luminous screen like the h2 before spending money for another camera.
 
The G2 screen I have is pretty much a H2, but with microprisms only in the middle
I may have to get new glasses and/or switch to AF

Do you have the g2? Supposedly the h2 is supposed to be the most luminous screen for the F2, I'd give it a try before switching camera.

I don't have that screen but my suggestion would be to spend few bucks and try it, alternatively if you have to change gear I might suggest an humble Pentax MX, it's smaller than most rangefinder and has a big and bright viewfinder, for bars and generally speaking street photography it might be the right camera.
 
Sorry y'all but with all due respect the clear winner in this category is the Contax T3
The Hexar AF is also a good choice but it doesnt really fit in a pocket and has no integrated flash
Im lucky enough to have both
 
A Leica IIIb with Summar and 100ISO film (APX100) can sometimes do ...
