I have these wonderful Luigi half-cases. They're great, quality leather, classy look, excellent protection for my investment. However, the other day I finished off a roll of film, and pulled my M7 from its case to reload. I tucked the half-case into my camera bag, changed the film and started shooting some more. Unknowingly, I never put the half-case back on, because the camera felt so good in my hand, cold metal, like a real tool. Just a much better connection between me and the 'metal and glass' (as joe would say 😉 ). It took me about an hour to realize that the case wasn't on. I freaked for about 15 seconds, thinking I'd lost the thing, before realizing it was in my bag.

I put the case back on, but it didn't feel right. I'm sure we can come up with many many analogies that are very funny, but the point is: the camera felt so good in my hands. It was a completely different experience.

I like the half case, because I've shot for a longer period of time in much warmer weather and things get kind of sweaty, so I'm keeping the case. But I'm thinking that if I ever need to "wake up" a day of shooting, I may just go naked.

🙂

any thoughts?

Naked and strapless is the way to go, especially if the camera has a good love handle like the contax G2. I find my hand cramps too much with the flat cameras, I hate walking about with a bag 😛

I'd have to agree, not have anything on them ( my only way - I have 1 or 2 cases for different bodies/types, but prefer the thinner body feel, most of the time. (must be that "thin is in" social pressure).

Gordy straps look like a great alternative (not only plug the sponser but applaud the design) - gonna' get me a few for going out in public so they arent completely exposed.

I like straps, but no longer use a case or half case when shooting. Nekkid but for the grip and strap!

I may use a case for storage, but mostly these days if I'm not activley using some piece of gear I put it in a clear plastic bag so I can see what it is.

In me humble, it's dangerous to use a camera without either a neck strap or a wrist strap. I've never dropped a strapless camera, but have come agonizingly close. I bought a Gordy's wrist strap, put it on both a Kiev and a GSN. Worked great.

I have a bad habit of driving along in the car, seeing a shot, jumping out of the car, and shooting half a dozen shots before I realize the neck strap is dangling from the camera. I need to get into a dangling-neck-strap-12-step recovery program.

The closest I've ever come to dropping a camera was when I was picking one up off a table, and the neckstrap loop got caught under the corner of the table.

I fully understand that tactile sensation of skin against raw camera...but Luigi's cases
are just SO nice...sorry, I can't make a call on this one. Feel privileged that you possess both and have that choice to make.

I´m allways using any camera without half case, just the neckstrap.
Many years before I released my camera thinking I had the neckstrap properly placed around my neck, and it wasn´t . I was fortunate the camera felt on a pillow, and didn´t bounce. Then I learned it the semi hard way.

i never use a case but then i realized that i sometimes shoot in -20 weather (or colder) and now i think alot about cases.
For me, this is where having the right gloves make the difference; I recently found a pair that allow tactile interaction with my cameras, while keeping my hands (reasonably) comfortable down to about 10 above. Go well below that, there isn't much one can do apart from those funky convertible mittens, which I have a love/hate thing about.

That is the issue.

I think it's best to maintain the 'best of both worlds,' because the cases are so nice--and useful. Yet when you've been shooting with them for a while, suddenly shooting without them is invgorating.

I enjoy neckstraps, but I find that I'll start wrapping them around my wrist. Like Frank, the one time I almost dropped a camera was when the neckstrap had caught something as I walked away, nearly yanking the camera out of my hand.

🙂

I'm too poor for any kind of strap, really. I'd LIKE one of Gordy's vertical-hanging neckstraps (strap lug + tripod socket) but I don't have the cash to shell out for a piece of leather at the moment.

I could also do with something for the CL. It offers a nice, easy, vertical hang, which I've found to be the most comfortable way to wear a camera.

A Luigi's half-case would be fantastic, but even more unattainable.

In the cold, I usually just shoot bare, with the camera and my hands kept naked in my pockets. Canada gets you pretty used to this.
