I am interested in Kentmere films. I want to bulk load the film. I want to know if it is worth the effort. I am interested in seeing the results of fellow RFF members. Please post. :)

Hi,
I've been working through my first 10 rolls of Kentmere 400... trying to make the same decision.... testing with Diafine, Aculux, and Rodinal... still not convinced. Good tone, even at ISO1000-1250 in Diafine, but the grain is quite pronounced, and i'd like more snap. It does dry wonderfully flat though, that's a huge bonus. i'd like to experiment with other developers, especially RPX-D. Still work to do, and there are many parameters to get right.

There are a few threads on the forum, also search on Flickr for more examples from me and others! Good luck with your testing, and post some shots.

I have a love-hate relationship with this film. I sort of like the roughness but sometimes it blocks highlights too easily. Here is Kentmere 400@250 in Xtol.

a few more, ISO800 Diafine 4+4 very gentle agitation.
I may end up with 30m of this. it's cheap!

"St Pancreas Station, London" ?????

This has to be one of the funniest typos / auto-corrects of 2012, so far!

It is interesting that this doesn't seem to be quite the same emulsion as the special-market Ilford Pan400, though I'd expected them to be more similar.

Spamming this thread :p

Kentmere 400 (@400) developed in xtol (1+1 for 12 minutes, 5 inversions at the start, thereafter 3 inversions in 5 seconds every 30 seconds) is niiiiice! I really like the look :)

again with the Rollei 35

looks a bit like HP5+ to my amateur eye.
I might get 100ft of this.
Has anyone tried Rodinal with this perhaps?

In the grain or in the snow...

Kentmere 400 @ 1600iso
Rodinal 1+50, 24min @ 20c

I processed it wrong and pushed it without realizing how grainy it actually was. I do like this photo, though.

thanks

I just bought 30m of Ilford Pan 400, which has been described as "erm basically old HP5"
mouse around my flickr for tests. Not sure Kentmere quite is quite my "it" but it's good stuff.

best,

Some people assume that K400 is based on HP5. Seems legit, after all it is technically an "Ilford" product. For sure it's no repackaged HP5, Simon Galley said it's a new emulsion.
Considering the price, I guess it can't be completly new.
Actually it would be nice to have some more detailed datasheets.

Go for it. Try it... it's good stuff, it's cheap enough, it won't hurt.

I get great results pushing kentmere 400 to 1600, I find the tones real nice and has lower grain and contrast than hp5.

Most of my recent b&w is shot on that combo - http://www.flickr.com/photos/louisbrown08/

best,

I bought Ilford Surveillance P3 and P4 on Ebay at a low price.
I only tested the P3 but it looks and behaves to 100% like the old HP5 autowinder thin base stuff. (same base thickness, base color and probably the same emulsion)

same place, similar light. The blacks with the Ilford Pan 400 seem smoother, and the grain more organic... like "the grain grows together to form the image" rather than "grain is sprinkled over the image"

It's all subjective and marginal ;)

best,

I shot my first roll of Kentmere 400 on Saturday and was pleasantly surprised. Shot with Contax G2, 28mm Biogon and souped in Rodinal 1:25.
