Should Film Just Shoot Its Self ...

Life makes more sense when you can just pay more for your digital camera than the other guy paid for his and be content that at least your pictures don't suck, right?

I thought you meant photography without cameras or photographers. The old european traffic cameras had bulk loading Robot cameras inside, which undoubtedly burned through a lot of film without intervention...
The stuff in my fridge is not so independent.

I was in a camera shop the other day, an old-school place that now deals almost exclusively in digital. Oddly, I went there to try out a Fuji ex-1, but they did not have one. So I bought a roll of TMax 100. I would've bought more but not at $9 a roll when I can get it online for $5.

Anyway, the manager said that he's amazed at how much film, especially black and white, they still sell--tons, were his words--and figures it's not going away anytime soon.

Slide film? Another 2-3 years, tops. But C41 and b&w aren't leaving us anytime soon.

Better to get rid of confirmational bias:

The confirmation bias refers to the tendency to selectively search for and consider information that confirms one's beliefs.

Thinking of buying an M2 now and having the same issue, as I don't have much money. But then I thought, if I spend the same money (including what I would spend on film and chemicals) on a decent Canon DSLR, that'd be worthless in 10 years too anyway 🙂

they have the same ups and downs - get one a few years old missing some of the bells and whistles, and you're good to go for cheap. Try for a 50D - they are incredibly underrated.

It's reminiscent of the "can chess computers ever beat [the best of] man" interminable speculation year after year after year.. What a relief when they finally did. Human players could again return to playing chess against each other, sometimes brilliantly, oftentimes not so brilliant, but always with an interesting twist or blunder somewhere..

... when a computer invents a game as compulsive as chess I'll start to worry 🙂

Its not only film. Its this doomsday thing. Look around. Some folks just are very ... mm.. easily aroused by these doomsday fanatics. People get pulled into these stories quite fast.

One day its the earth ending. Then its film. Then its the climate. Then its clean water and so on...
I am not saying that those things are not true, but simply overthinking it will simply make it worse. Just go out, live your only life that you have and do the things that you want and still can (e.g. shoot film). I see no conundrum.

I have started truly enjoying photography after stopping thinking of everything else than taking photos with whatever in hand. I use whatever camera I have with whatever film I have or can come by.
Sometimes I get lazy and pick up my digital Nikon, but it does not really matter. Either way I have fun with it no matter what others people say.

... so we don't have to put up with this interminable speculation? year after year after year

I don't mind the discussions and speculation at all personally.

There's new members joining this forum and exiting constantly ... so the fact that we've heard it all before is our problem!

😀

I agree.
We tend to lose sight of the fact of just how unrepresentative our little corner of photography is with its fixation on Rangefinders ,form factor , film and old film cameras.

I never see any of this stuff out on the streets or discussed within other photography groups.

I`m happy with that but it does suggest that to any new members this may require some explanation.
Hence the repeat questions and speculation.
