Should start some arguments? Top 50 Cameras?

i would put 5D higher than 700D for the reason that it's the first FF to the (semi)mass market

and the first digital rebel too, and also the first nex and olympus m4/3

one could also chip in m5, without it leica might not revive from the collapse of sales :p

nokia 808 should also be mentioned here, along with iphone4 that paved way to so many standards

That should give you a clue on how extensive of a research being done here :)
 
Supposing it is a list of popular choices, it is not too surprising. O.k. I'm still a little surprised by the inclusion of the Pentax K1000, and always will be any time it appears on a "best/greatest/influential" camera list.

The credibility of such lists can be instantly gauged by whether or not they include Topcon for implementing open aperture TTL metering. I have yet to see a list which does.

I'm also a bit surprised their audience overlooked the Kraft Velveeta Shells & Cheese Dinner camera, the first 110 format camera to be adorned with a sticker advertising Kraft Velveeta Shells & Cheese Dinner.
 
I'd probably include the Ermanox, the M3, the Kine Exakta I, Leica I Model A, the Super Sport Dolly, the Hasselblad Super Wide C...hmm, would be interesting for us each to come up with our own '50 best' list. I'm sure they'd all be different!
 
I added the M3 and Graflex, as did Igor + he added Deardorff.

True, a list of the most dreadful could be of interest, but I believe I have blocked out from my mind a few of the ones I owned?

Enough odd choices in the lot.

Camera Show on Sunday, perhaps I can find a few of these to add to the ones I already have and should be selling off?

Perhaps I can pull out a few camers lying about and make a sign "One of the Top 50 cameras" ever produced? ;-)

It must be reassuring to have the feeling that your criteria for excellence are universally applicable to everyone else.

Roger, I was thinking along some of the same lines, I was a kid when I started, and we certainly could not afford magazines to even read about the "best" cameras-- and by High School graduation I had been working/hanging around (never took home a cash paycheck-- only "in kind" payment)" from a shop that is still doing business.

I did have a used (I think everything was used in my world) Rollei 3.5 and H1a Pentax, -- the economic philosophy was to stick with a system once you bought in-- and the Speed Graphic I had used in school.

Shop sold Hasselblad, Rollei, Linhof, Nikon F and Leica, many often to non users I felt, folks who wore cameras on occasion, but I have to say the Nikons were the most used.

Just not by me. It took almost ten years before I could afford those choices-- so I shot with the Rollei and upgraded the H1a to the Spotmatic, bought some lenses and the shop owner gave me Rollei attachments as they came in with trades. I did pick up an S2 that came in.

I do think you get a feeling for someone writing about cameras which they never used-- but you recall the games back then-- the magazines used to disassemble the cameras, and bury you in stats, perhaps shooting one or two rolls, etc. I always wondered if they got those cameras back together?

I posted this, passed along by several of my friends-- because I was interested in specific opinions, and I figured about collectively we should have had first hand experience with much of what is on the list-- e.g. it is much of your baliwick for sure-

Which is a long way around the barn to say I agree, but I am curious how people come to use some equipment purchased for other than collection status.

I mean, I had a rough 4x5 and 6x9cm, and traded my bicycle for the Speed Graphic-- which I had used for years as a RF camera shooting everything from groups to sports, I used the Rollei for what I thought was serious work, portraits and for weddings, and the Pentax for reportage and candid work.

I would also be interested in your list of cameras are bought for elegance and beauty-- the Art Deco Bantum, etc. -- which also produce fine images.

Should we also not consider those cameras that have historic significance, such as the Ermanox, the Leica I, and the Kodak I of 1889 ('You press the button, we do the rest'). Don't necessarily know if they'd qualify as 'the best' -- whatever criteria is used to make that determination -- but without cameras such as those, camera development and photography might have evolved very differently.

Oh and by the way Roger -- Porsche is the best ;)

Glad to see some one disagreeing with me. So why don't you tell me why the Nikon 1 is such a good camera? I really can't seem to figure it out myself

Maxxum 9 with 1/12000th of a second top shutter speed. And it still works on mine to this day.

Silent. Extremely small. Low weight. Low visual signature (flat black; no reflective bits). Good EVF. Very fast ("clairvoyant") autofocus. Deep depth of field even in low light. Extraordinary frame rate for action (60 fps). Good battery life. Good image quality; considering sensor size, phenomenal image quality.

It's not a D800 but Nikon makes those too, if that's what floats your boat.

Well, I totally agree except for 1-15 and 17-20, and I'm not sure about 16.

Awww, come on - everyone knows that the Pentacon Six is THE reliable workhorse in medium format photography only let down by its low quality Zeiss optics. Or was it the other way round? ;)
