Hi,

my recommendation for lighting situations in which you need ISO 1600 - 3200:

- Fuji Provia 400X @800 (almost the same quality like @400; it's the finest grain and highest resolving ISO 400/800 color film)
- balanced fill in flash with a modern camera and flash.

With the fill in flash you get the little bit additional light you need from ISO 800 of the film to the ISO 1600 - 3200 the situation needs.
So only one or two stops are delivered by the fill in flash. That is very little additional light compared to the whole light of the scene.
By this additional light you get the needed shadow detail. This light has no influence on the midtones and highlights.
Therefore you can manage even high contrasts because the additional shadow light is reducing overall contrast.

Modern flash systems are working perfectly in such situations. In 99% of the cases you get perfect lighting and exposures, but don't see that flash was used.
The light looks absolutely natural with this little additional flash light.

Don't be afraid of using a modern flash with a modern camera. In this field technology of the last 25 years has really made excellent progresses.

Jan: thanks, can you share with us some of the more modern "natural" flash shots ?

my problem with flash is that it floods everything with light, which is okay for portrait shots but for environment shots, i can't seem to get the slow-synch speed types.

My thinking would be to introduce led light into the equation, so that there is more control of the direction. my current 12x12 led is a tad too powerful, I am thinking about taping it. ...

You can certainly control flashes, almost as much as hot lights. Just make a grid or snoot for your flash and get it off the camera if you want more directional lighting.

That being said, I prefer non-flash shots most of the time. There are a lot of people doing cool things out there with flashes right now, but some of them are so over the top for me. Nothing beats window light 🙂 Here's a shot on Portra 800 just to contribute to the thread.

Sorry, not possible at the moment, my scanner is defunct.

Well, with modern flash systems with fill in flash and the options of further flash power control there is no "flood with light" effect as you describe.
You only see better shadow detail, no empty dark shadows anymore. Midtones (zone IV - VI) and highlights (VII - X) are not visibly influenced.

And slow sync. shots are a real pleasure with modern flash technology.
