My scans always look less sharp than the original prints.

Your scanner might be slightly out of focus. Did you calibrate the focus by making a series of scans where you shim your negatives?

I used to scan my negatives, they were always OK; now I only scan my prints. This one is OK, but I had problems with the ones last week. Maybe the pictures were not sharp enough or the (very old) camera needs shimming.
