It's time for a laugh I think, so here are a couple of photos.

It's my new (to me) Fed-2! It came with the Fed-50 lens which was a bit stiff (mostly arperture), so I working it while watching a movie and it's much better now. It still really needs a CLA though to make it operate really smoothly.

But the screws in the lens were filthy - lots of blocks of dried lube which had to be cleaned out. The difference afterwards was a revelation! Now it moves smoothly and easily, better than some new lenses I've had! I've taken a test roll but need to get it developed first to see if it's ok. Looking through it, it seems alright, but the acid test is the quality of pics.

The camera itself showed capping but after running a spare film through and a brief CLA, it seems to be working absolutely fine. I had to clean some grime and dirt off, but it was fun (and surprisingly easy compared to Japanese cams) to take the top off. Curiously, the limits (lack of slow speeds and no exposure meter) seem to add to its charms.

But - a question for Fed-2 owners - I keep on picking it up and playing with it - just focusing on something, winding on and hearing the shutter release, or just handling it. Is this wierd or does every Fed-2 owner do this? Although the camera is awkward and old, it just feels so nice?!

btw - the pictures were taken with an old Praktica SLR with a Pentacon 1.8 lens and extremely poor light (just one floor lamp and the main light in a lampshade) so the lens was wide open - hence the enormous DoF (partially intentional as I haven't used the camera for years and wanted to find its limits) and poor exposure (all my fault). Apologies!
Just had my test roll back and it's good! The focus seems to be right and there don't seem to be holes in the curtain. The shutter speed seems to be just fine too although 2 pictures of the 24 were capped. After continually fiddling with the camera on 'B' after removing the roll, this doesn't seem to be an issue any more. Who said playing with yourself was bad, eh? :D

The Fed-50 collapsible lens is nice though a little flare can be seen when the sun is shining into the lens around midday. It seems very nice and sharp wide open at f3.5, less so (but not much) when stopped down a little more.

Overall, I'm impressed and will be taking it with me when I go abroad next week. The Fed 2 is just too charming not to take and it seems to be begging to be used.

Keith,

Have you tortured a Nikon or Canon DSLR the same way?:D

I was very cranky with that Iskra at the time and was considering melting it down and turning it into something useful ... a doorstop maybe? I have got over my angst now and have realised that there is no such thing as bad cameras ... only bad sellers who don't check cameras properly before they despatch them to the other side of the globe!

I rescued it from the KGB style interrogation before it started to scream! :D

With 2 days of rain outside and an old spare (and incomplete) Fed body and an ugly (but still working) Zorki C Body, I came up with the Idea to make a Fed Zorkistein of it. I checked the Fed's serial number and concluded most of the parts had been exchanged from other Fed's. The body shell's vulcanite was torning off and the film pressure plate was missing.
So I exchanged the shutter, (it had to be reglued because the main shutter drum of the Zorki C is langer), swapped the body shell, and used the C's shutter dial. The shutter dial fits but the screw is still visible. I still have to figure out what to do with the middle screw of the top plate on the back. :)

TK-2D+CZJ Tevidon 70/2.8

TK-2D+CZJ Tevidon 70/2.8

Hi,

Here is something unusual. A very hard to find LTM 2x telconverter TK-2D, plus a extremely sharp CZJ Tevidon 70/2.8. The 33mm coin image was shot wide open with this combo at about 60 cm. No sharpening, but auto contrast and auto colour with PS.:D And a 100% crop of the full frame. A very interesting toy, isn't it?

Cheers,

Zhang

The zorki camera is an export version Zorki-Zorki, and with the older shutter speed progression 20-30-40-60-100-...

Just purchased these two and a J-12 off of the 'Bay. Have to say that I was pleasantly surprised at the great condition both were in. Very happy with the seller.

Here it is again with the J-12 attached.

Already ran film through the 4A and everything looks superb. I still have to load film in the Z4 and see how it performs. Quick eyeball check tells me that the shutter has no leaks and looks correct. Gotta run some film through it this week.
