IIIa on the right, with Summar 50/2. It was a bargain at under $200. Lots of scratches and brassing and I had to releather it myself. It's my pocket camera.

My latest acquisition, a 'Leica' 1, "Model A", or whatever its 'official' title is. The 'hockey stick Leica', the 'first production Leica' - the one with the self capping focal plane shutter, no rangefinder and an Elmar 50mm 3.5 non removeable lens (i.e. not without a screwdriver, etc.), etc., etc.

The user guide simply refers to it as a 'Leica' camera, - thats it. 😉

Incidentally there is no mention of the name 'Leica' anywhere on the camera, but it does say 'Leica' on the lens cap. Proving this is the original lens cap however, may be a tall order.

Whatever it is, I am absolutely tickled pink to have found this clean and apparently well cared for 1929 version of a camera I have long wanted, and in what appears to be reasonable working order. A CLA is planned in the near future.

With luck and a degree of patience, I may eventually have some actual photos from the camera, but not until 2010.

Hello:

I realize this is a beauty show but I have a question based on the many fine LTMs displayed. Was there variety in the early versions of vulcanite that determined wear patterns? We see here the brown - grey, but generally intact cover, wear pattern on many IIIx cameras?

Apart from the grey cameras all vulcanite started life black. Brown is as a result of exposure to chemicals or simply sunshine. Texture changes a few times over the years.

I've been looking for a black LTM user for a little while and finally managed to get this one off Ebay. The rather unusual 'smoke stack' of a soft release seems to be quite usable. There is also a metal band clamped around the Summar to give click-stops on the aperture that I think may end up being less usable given its firmness.

Looks like yours has a shutter-speed dial for the external flash sync attachment (VACU) ?

My dad took thousands of kodachrome around the world with his 1950 IIIf through 1970. The slides have stood up well. He always regret selling it and I picked this one up to fix that.
