I know it's a month further on, but a rather common reason to file notches into the film gate was so the press room's darkroom people & the photo editors could tell from the proofs and prints which photographer took the shot and would get the credit. Newspapers did this to their cameras, apparently.
A year or two ago a Leica M4 was up on eBay with notching - the owner, formerly with a newspaper, explained the notches for bidders.

Trying out a LED powered lightpanel (www Waferlight.com) for table top shots. Took some of my more battered Nikon Rf's out as subjects. Interestingly enough, I like chrome Nikon Rf's more than I like chrome M's! Ok, a nicely brassed S3 or SP has its own charm - but even a dented and bashed SP looks good in chrome! Shot with a Leica R6 and the Macro-Elmar 60mm f12.6 on ORWO UN 54 (a moviestock from orwona.com), developed in PCK.
Beautiful camera, Vick, and how I love your lens, and, even more, that 5cm finder ...
Erik.
