Honestly, it's a user. I just didn't want to show that in the picture. :eek:
But it's a lot of fun to use now. Shot two rolls already this weekend.
Well I also like the simplicity; no extra things like a meter (I use an E3.) It does look good from the front though...

Thanks Eugene. Took me maybe 15 hours to put together. Will add a varnish to her before calling it a day. But I foresee a modification or two. The standard may need reinforcing. I might also find another solution for the WLF hood in time. But that is the beauty of DIY.

Thanks, i was told that by a friend, but im not too sure what does this means. Mine is a xenotar lens and there is no 12/24 on the top plate.

The seller who sold me didnt mention it to me either....I guess i was lucky?
 
So here is my Yashica 12. Probably my favorite camera that I own. The image quality, form, and function make it amazing for street photography. I have a question for all of you though.

What makes all these wonderful TLRs so different? Practically all of them have 75-80mm f/3.5 Tessar lenses. Does it really matter which one you pick? Aren't they all going to produce basically same results?

The reason I ask is because I really want to try a Diacord, an Autocord, a Mamiyaflex, an Olympus Flex (if I can find one), a Flexaret VII, and a Kodak Reflex II.

I know that coatings are a factor but in ideal conditions, all the 4 element lenses should look very similar, right?
 
I can't see much difference in mine, have a Mat 66, 124G , and Mat EM, and they are all the same lens and take photos as sharp as my Autocord, Rolleicords IV and VB . Main difference appears to be slight colour changes and contrast a little , where I have not checked them is wide open at 3.5 as most of my shots seem to be at f8-16. I would love to set them all up on tripods with the same film and compare at different f stops. i think my 80mm Mamiya C33 would win but that is I think 6 elements so does not count.
 
I wonder why they all copied Rollei and didn't try different focal lengths and lens designs. Too risky perhaps? Why mess with what works, maybe? I bought the Yashica 12 because it was cheaper than the Germans but better looking than the MAT 124G. Plus, I never see another Yashica 12. Same reason why I want a Flexaret and a Kodak Reflex. If they all take basically the same picture, buy for design and aesthetics.
 
I know the YashicaMat had a longer reach add on viewing and taking lens,plus I believe that the Mamiyas' had different length lens assemblies. Peter

Nice looking hood. Bet it vignettes.
I've tried several Yashicamats. They are great cameras and super image producers. They flare like hell though with out proper protection.
I find a hand shading the lens is most effective.

There is very little vignetting with the hood. A lot of my photos have a moody look to them so I guess it works. Had it laying around when I bought a Kodak Signet 35.
 
don't get vignetting as I always remenber what my dad used to say "Boy always use protection" use Rollei and Yashica Bay 1 hoods when outside and don't think flare has ever been an isuse ,the 80mm on the C33 is round and works well even though ts meant to have a square one. And as for why they decided on 75-80mm, well it is closest to the standard 50mm on an SLR .
If you want to see vignetting try wide acc lens that Yashica produced mine vignet at all f-stops.
