Robert, although I don't know the person in question, I can tell you that the image is of the bay side of Barnegat Bay Island about five miles south of my house. This was one of the worst hit areas. It is still under martial law.

We will be making our first inspection visit on Sunday. We have been told that our house did okay and that those located a few places closer to either the bay or ocean side of the island -- were talking lots that are only 25 to 50 wide, so figure a difference of just a few hundred feet -- suffered the worst and that we were situated in the luckiest mid-block spot.
 
By the way, most if not all of the photos in the link I posted above were taken two weeks or more after the storm when a significant amount of equipment and manpower had already begun to make cleanup efforts.
 
We spent two weeks in a Red Cross shelter after a foot and a half of water flooded our ground floor apartment in Oceanside NY.
We returned to salvage the few items not damaged. I did save some of my camera gear; I had stored it in my car ahead of the storm.

There were some interesting characters in the shelter, but as you might expect photography was the last thing on my mind.
I believe the Red Cross prohibits photography there. Displaying an expensive camera would probably be unwise anyway.

Our apartment complex is currently uninhabitable due to water damage and lack of utilities.
We are temporarily in a FEMA evacuation hotel and looking for another place.
The market is extremely tight and rents have jumped significantly.
I hope we will not be forced to return to the shelter.

It will be awhile before I retrieve any gear from the storage unit.
I have concerns more pressing than my photo hobby right now.

I've been following the Sandy story on the news, blogs, and boards. It's unreal! I've never seen anything like that. I feel so sorry for those whose lives have been absolutely turned inside out by the storm. 🙁 🙁 Those shots of Coney hit a little too close to home. 🙁

I can remember when I was growing up, for several years (right around by b'day) it seemed like we had a hurricane scare each year. I think the worst I remember was Far Rock getting hit hard when I was maybe 7 or so.

I really hope everyone affected gets things back to normal soon!
