I was reading your site and was really glad to have stumbled on your experiences with the Pentax Super Takumar lens on the Zenit. I was about to get one! Glad I dodged that bullet.

There is another way of removing a lens stuck this way on a Zenit. Work a piece of thin brass shim - or a feeler gauge, into the hole the pin has dropped into. Unscrew the lens, and the pin rides up the shim. I used this method when I got an SMC Takumar stuck on a Zenit.

I already had a collection of five AF-D lenses. So, I took a gamble on a $20 camera body.

The N80 performs better than I expected. No complaints, thus far.

Last week I scored this SF1N (body only) for $9 plus shipping. Seems to be working perfectly, and it even came with a good 2CR5 battery, which is worth as much as I paid for the camera!

Visually it's very much of it's time, but it's my second favourite Pentax body (right behind the ME Super), really a great camera.

Below are two very recent additions to the gaggle, which I did not say "no" to, despite how hard I tried! 🙂

Since I posted my Pentax woes here and on a few other sites, people both locally and on line have been offering me stuff. I appreciate it, but most of it has been what I already have or don't really need and I have (make that HAD) more cameras than I can ever use. So, I've turned down most of it. Anyway ...

The one on the right is a Mamiya-Sekor 1000 DTL from a co-worker, who said it belonged to her late husband who got it overseas when he was in the Navy. It's IMMACULATE! Pristine! Looks almost new, really. She was going to trash it, but knew I liked old cameras. "I don't even think you can get film for it anymore." was what she said. 🙂 It operates smoothly and the shutter speeds sound right, but the battery is long gone.

Now the one on the left is a lucky find from this morning! Another friend and co-worker was rummaging through a local thrift shop and phoned me saying she found an "A-shy Pentax" for $35. I first told her no, I have too many cameras but I asked a few questions. The conversation went kinda like this ...

Me: Uh, can you see what model it is?
She: Yes, Vivitar.
Me: That's a lens brand, does it have any more markings?
She: Yes, MX.
Me: {perk!} What kind of shape is it in?
She: Well, it's a bit scratched, there's some "gold" showing through the paint ...
Me: Is the body painted black!
She: Yes.
Me: DON'T LET IT OUT OF YOUR HAND, I'LL BE RIGHT THERE!
She: Ok.
Me: {run to parking lot} VVVvvrrroooommmm {SCREEEEeeeeeech!}

Anyway, it's a genuine black MX, looks in good condition, light seals good, shutter sounds OK, no battery.

The lens is a 70-210 f4.5 Vivitar, which I believe is one of their cheaper zooms. It focuses cleanly to infinity with both the lens that came with it and the 28-80 of mine.

Now I REALLY have more cameras than I know what to do with! I guess my next stop is Walgreens for some batteries, if I can figure out what they both use. 🙂

I guess I'll be shooting a test roll in each of these this weekend. 🙂

According to this--http://www.butkus.org/chinon/mamiya/mamiya_1000dtl/1000dtl.htm the Mamiya takes a single battery. " To replace, use one of the following Silver Oxide batteries: Eveready S-76E, Mallory MS-76, or Ray-O-Vac RS-76."

The MX--http://www.butkus.org/chinon/pentax/pentax_mx/pentax_mx.htm uses "Two 1.5V silver oxide batteries (G13)..."

And, if I remember correctly that is actually the same battery--modern equivalent is, I think, SR44.

I've had two of those Mamiyas, they are fine cameras if a little bland. The one trick feature is the ability to switch between spot metering and averaged metering. The meter will work fine with a modern battery (I forget which size, but look online, somebody knows).

Thanks, I'm sure the MX uses the same as the MG I recently picked up (garage sale) which is the LR44. I know Walgreens has them. I'm sure the Pentax K1000 uses that one too.

The shutter curtains are in perfect shape. I have a feeling it was serviced at some point when it was maybe only a decade or two old, as usually the original curtains would be in very poor shape - additionally the little rubber roller that rolls on the film spool to indicate film advancing isn't all dried up as is also usual with these.

A 1952 model Praktica - now that I've fixed the mirror fault it had, and cleaned it up, it could be loaded with film. Unfortunately, I find the waist level viewfinders on these very awkward.

A WLF is about the most wonderful thing to have once you know what to use it for. Get some macro tubes and shoot small stuff and you'll swear to never use a prism finder for that sort of work again.
