Well, it finally happened! After no adjustment problems with the viewfinder, no hot spots, and no problems in general with the camera since I got it in April, my luck went south!

This morning I dropped my daughter off at the train at 6:00 AM. My intent was to spend the golden hour photographing commuters for a current project. I planned on the first few shots from my car. Lo and behold, grab the RD1, whip it up to my eye and frozen shutter button! Since I had a Abrahamson soft release attached, I figured I would unscrew it and see what was going on. So, when I removed the soft release, the entire shutter button assembly deconstructed. I mean big time! Spring shot one way, button, shaft and housing went another. After an extremely anxious twenty minutes, I was finally able to collect all the parts from various locations around, under and between the driver's seat and the console. Rather than work in the car, I brought the parts back to my office where I finally reassembled and got the shutter button working.

The problem is that the soft release seems to lock up the shutter button assembly, so it looks like I can no longer use it. Has anyone else had similar problems?

Jeff, that sucks. But no, I too use a softrelease and have never experienced anything you report.

Are you sure it's not because of the battery? Which is what happens to me with the non-Epson batteries I have. They go empty quicker than the Epson, often before the indicator...uh... indicates a near-empty battery. Then, when I still try to squeeze out another shot, the shutter locks up. Only remedy is to switch the camera off, open the battery compartment, take the battery out, put (a new) one back, and switch on again.

Yes, I had a problem where the soft release would sometimes lock up the shutter button. The problem seemed to occur when the soft release turned the shutter button a certain way. I sent the camera in for repair and Epson sent me a new camera. I haven't used the soft release on the new camera and I haven't run into the same problem again...

Hi, I stopped using the Abrahams(sp) soft release on my M6, because everytime I put the camera in my bag, or on my shoulder, or whatever, the shutter was fired and then when I wanted to grab a shot, the shutter was not cocked. It's hard to be "decisive" like that! Just did not work for me. Thanks Jim.

I sent the camera in for repair and Epson sent me a new camera. I haven't used the soft release on the new camera and I haven't run into the same problem again...

That's why I am glad I resolved the problem, and am learning to live without the soft release. My RD1 has been no problem with the exception of this issue, and I don't want to get someone else's problem camera. Thanks!
