Shutter Release cable for Leica IIIc

Hi. New to Leica. Need to find a shutter release for Leica IIICs. Ebay auctions say the Nikon AR-2 Shutter Cable release will do the job. Inside of the Nikon AR-2 shutter release capsule has threads. Outside of Leica lens shutter button is smooth. What will work? Thanks. Looking to do night photography. Work with 135 mm lens.

I guess it could work if you unscrew the shutter release guard which is around the shutter release button.

Umscrew and remove the collar surrounding the shutter button. You'll find a threaded collar that should fit the threads on the Nikon cable release. Leica and Nikon used the same shutter-button arrangement. There are also adapters that screw into a standard cable release. These are known as Leica nipples.

No need to remove the guard. The cable will screw on with the guard still attached. On my IF anyway.

I can confirm the above - it works on my IIIc with the AR-2, and now that I think about it, the IIIf that I had almost ten years ago. The IIIb and older models need to remove the collar.

The fit and finish of the AR-2 is really wonderful by the way.

Well, I didn't think it would work without unscrewing the shutter button collar, so I pulled out one of my IIIf's and the Nikon release. Still not seeing how it would work, I put the cable release on the shutter button, there is a gap around that is the obvious fit, and started screwing. Sure enough, it screwed in! I never knew. I feel like I've done all my learning for the day. Time for a nap.

That cable mount was adopted by a fairly strange range of cameras, including Ricoh Diacord TLRs. It makes a very secure attachment to the camera, especially with a cable release as heavily engineered at the Nikon AR-2.

That was a surprise. I didn't realise it could be done without removing the guard on my IIIc. Now I'm wondering where the IIIc's instruction book is to see why I missed it.

I have what appears to be the same camera, though it is a IIIf rather than a IIIc. I don't have this cable but I am interested in possibly acquiring one.

I have nothing against the Nikon AR-2 cable release. No doubt it's very nice, but I'm sure for less money you can get an adapter (Leica nipple). Then you can use any standard cable release you may have--long, short, cloth, metal, locking, not locking, bulb (air release), certain self timers, and whatever else will screw in. Anyway, the choice is yours. I have a Leica IIIf, Canons, and a Nicca. You don't unscrew the collar on any of them.

On a IIIc/IIIf/IIIg: - the cable screws down inside of the collar, no need to remove.

With anything earlier than IIIc, you have to unscrew the collar to get the cable release on.

Oddly enough, the collar from my IIIb works on the IIIc, but the IIIc collar is too big for the IIIb.
