my brother-in-law brought his M8, i was trying out his camera, and its way quieter than my M8!
the clink is louder and even the whirr afterwards was louder on my M8. his was more muffled, like there was more insulation in the camera than mine.
my camera was purchased late january and his was this month. you think they made changes to the camera to dampen the noise more? you think all M8s have slightly different tones in shutter noises? or you think its because i've shot alot more pictures with the camera and somehow the break-in makes changes to the noise of the shutter?
dude i wish mine was that quiet too...

Maybe your's is just wearing out- All that metal against metal in the shutter probably ginds away every time you fire
just kidding.
just kidding.

Since it was the (to me) horrifying sound the camera made the first time I pressed the shutter release of an M8 at Photokina that utterly ruined my dream of a digital M, I will be following this thread very closely.
(I know... that's a pretty horrifying run-on sentence...)

i would really like to see if there is anybody who decided to buy a second M8 a few months after their first to give comparisons of their two M8.
i would also like to hear from anybody who bought two M8s at the same time to give comparisons too.
anybody?
thanks

Didn't the firmware update change the way the shutter behaves?

Yes, the latest firmware changed the shutter sound slightly. You probably would only notice the difference though side-by-side comparison. It's a change in tonal quality rather than decibel level though.

So, is it likely that the "new" sound will still make my skin crawl...?
>It's a change in tonal quality
Is this something that you can put into words?

could it possibly be chrome vs black?? his is chrome and mine is black. i'm not technical enough to know if this constitutes different material (or if its just change in metal color), but can that change the sound of the shutter?
fyi, we both have the newest firmware.

I tried my first M8 today at a Leica demo. I have no idea what firmware it was running, but I was pleasantly surprised how quiet the camera was. It's not MP quiet, but it was a lot quieter than what I was lead to believe.

Emm..."a change in tonal quality" is something that was put into words, I'm sure he can!AusDLK said:>It's a change in tonal quality

The shutter sound changed in that the prominent, high-pitch grinding noise that accompanied the shutter recocking seems to have been alleviated; the noise is still there, but there's something psychologically more acceptable to it.
The noise is still something that bothers me. I can't believe that Leica still has their head in a GW hole and claims that the camera is silent. It is not silent *at all*. That is a flat out lie.
That said, for some reason, I've noticed since that firmware release that the camera blends in more in slightly crowded places. Which is a big improvement from reasonably or moderately crowded places where the chatter volume had to be high.
It would be unthinkable for me to use the M8 at a "classical" music concert just like I have used my mechanical film Leica bodies. No way. Nothing discreet about it in a music hall when everybody is quiet, people around you are going to hear it and have their attention caught by it unless they have a serious hearing impairment. They will still hear the film Leicas go off, but they won't turn around to see what made the click.
Leica has got to further improve the sound of the shutter. And put back a winding lever, that will give you the option to activate the shutter recocking when you want to, not the instant after taking the shot.
That said, it will be very very very very hard to let go of my M8 when I have to let go of it. But when they own up and fire their own Donald who rammed through the ill-conceived design of their shutter release strategy, then they can move on and set the example they used to set. Leica should reexamine and reclaim their available-light, discreet-shooting roots, embrace it, and be the example and Gold Standard once again.

Considering that this machine is not much more than an overblown focusing light meter, why are we trying to make it into an audio device, too?

you buy a car. your friend buys a car, the same car. you take a drive together, and both cars sound noticiably different.
maybe its normal. both cars made by hand and it causes normal variances in noise.
maybe not normal. maybe on ecar has a broken gasket, valve loose, etc. maybe its not normal.
its my camera thats louder! i'm just curious to know if its normal~

How would a firmwear update change a mechanical noise?
