I recorded my Bessa R3M and Leica IIIf using a digital recorder. The only way I could attach them to this post was to make them zipped files which you'll have to download, neither file is very large.

R3M file: R09_0001.MP3.zip
IIIf file: R09_0002.MP3.zip

Recorded indoors, with an Edirol R-09 mp3/wav recorder, stereo, using built-in condensor mics, each recording is from two distances: one foot and six inches from recorder. Sample rate 44.1 kHz, MP3 at 224kbps. By the way, these two files are totally safe to download, they are simply mp3 files about 15-20 sec duration.

To my ears, the Bessa is not much louder. It has a sharper sound. These recordings were taken with the shutter being fired at 1/250th. Another comparison at a slower speed might be useful...

MC,

Is it raining real hard up there and you can't get out? 😀

worked fine for me. Not too much difference between them to my ears. The volume being similar - I guess the Bessa sounds more mechanical, the Leica more organic.

meh.

Vancouver weather: its darn nice today. No rain, although we had a full day of it on Wednesday, when I was working outdoors on a tv show. And no snow, we might get two or three days of snow in the city in the winter, of course there's plenty of it, usually, on the mountains across the harbour. For a great view of English Bay and what the day is like, try either of these regularly updating web cams:
The Bayshore Hotel Cam looks east north east: Stanley Park in the foreground, Coal Harbour, beyond, on a clear day, Mt Seymour.
The Burrard Bridge Cam looks west, or in the winter southwest. For a more complete description of what this camera sees, visit THIS link instead (its a bit wordy but it gives you more information than I want to enter here)

Thanks

A leica's sound varies with speed the fastest escapment speed 1/15 in a M allows a tuned ear to say when/if a CLA is due. The III (or II) tend to be noisier as any mechanisal artifice is conducted through the rotating speed dial, and escapes.

Try a M is a dealers on 1/15... and I know 1/30 runs the escapment as well.

Thanks, I was actually going to ask if anyone could post how a Bessa sounds as I've been warned they're loud. I'm used to a Canonet (which is more muffled sounding), but the Bessa sounds good.
