Just picked up the aforementioned lens today after only five minutes to make up my mind (the owner was called away right after I arrived on the scene). Notice it is the D version, not the DG of which I've read plenty of reviews, most lamenting the lack of on-lens aperture control.
I haven't had the chance to get it on my D80 yet as the light was failing after I got home, and the first camera I had available was the N80. It is a fairly balanced combination, and the AF seemed to work well at full zoom looking through a window with Venetian blinds. It's a bit noisy though, and not as fast as I'd hoped, but then maybe in full sun things will improve.
I'm hoping the coverings don't turn into a mushy mess like all the other Sigma lenses I've had to deal with before. It's not my first choice in third-party lens makers, but sometimes you have to take what is on the camera to get a particular body. But there just isn't that much info out there on the D version, even original MSRP. And when you do find something, many times they will show a photo of the wrong lens, so you're not sure if they are actually talking about the right one.
And I've got to get a hood for it. Will have to contact the owner on Monday and see if it is there in the shop. Didn't have any success on eBay.
It looks really wicked all zoomed out.

Dear Mac,
The only thing I can comment on is in reference to your comment about things turning into a mushy mess.
Today I sold a Sigma 150-500 DG OS with the matte finish that I bought used 5 years ago. There was nothing faded, smeared, or smudged on the lens when I bought it, and it was in the same condition when I sold it though I used it kind of hard.
If your lens holds up like mine did you have nothing to worry about.

Since my D version is older than your DG, Tim, I'm hoping that its current condition shows Sigma fixed that problem. I've got a UC 35-135mm in Canon EOS mount that I believe is even older, and it's holding up well too. Can't say I much care for how it operates though.
