I have the opportunity to buy some lenses from a fellow on another forum but wanted to be assured of their compatibility with my camera. They are older Sigma lenses as follows:

90mm 2.8
21-35mm 3.5-4.2

I have a Canon Rebel 2000 that I bought in November of 2003 but was told by a Sigma rep via email that these lenses would be incompatible with this camera. I guess I am hoping beyond hope that they might work despite the words of the Sigma guy simply because they are a group of lenses (there is one other for sale that will work with my body) that I would like to have in my bag!

Do you have any ideas about Canon/Sigma compatibility issues? Your help is much appreciated.

Older sigmas have a ROM that is incompatable with newer EOS bodies. If these are older lenses, I'd have to say to pass on them or buy something like an EOS 630 on Ebay to use them with.

Going to have to get that EOS 5 someday... 😀

Sigma lenses made before let's say July 2000 will not work on newer Eos bodies nor digital cams. Sigma will charge you a fee to convert the lens; rechipping. I'd say $100-$150 per lens, IF the lenses are not under warranty period.
It's of course, not worth to rechip since in most cases you can buy the same newer used lens for the same price.

The Canon Rebel 2000 does not have compatability with most Sigma lenses. The EOS 5, 3, and Elan II and 7 are the ones with most problems. The Rebel (film) series and 1-series (film and digital) do not generally have problems.

The "problem" is when the lens is stopped down farther than it's maximum aperture, they lock up and flash the battery icon at you. One can shoot them wide open on any camera. I have used old Sigma lenses before, and actually only had a problem on my 10D and never on my late Elan 7e or Rebel 2000 before it.
